Thirteen young women at IIT Gandhinagar are turning a scholarship into something far more powerful than financial assistance — a launchpad for confidence, ambition and careers in engineering.
Their success story took centre stage as the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) and Bajaj Auto Foundation strengthened their partnership for the Rupa Rahul Bajaj Scholarship for Women in Engineering (RRBSWE), with a Memorandum of Understanding signed on August 27.
The scholarship is aimed at supporting meritorious women pursuing undergraduate engineering education, while encouraging more women to enter engineering and manufacturing — sectors where expanding female participation remains a major opportunity for India’s future workforce.
The initiative goes beyond paying educational expenses. It combines financial assistance with mentorship, industry exposure, professional and leadership development, wellbeing support and alumni engagement, creating a broader support ecosystem around the scholars.
The presence of 13 IITGN women students among the scholarship recipients gives the initiative a particularly compelling dimension: when financial barriers are eased and young women are given the confidence and exposure to pursue their ambitions, engineering classrooms can become launchpads for much larger dreams.
The 13-scholar story gets a bigger platform
The occasion marked the signing of the MoU between IITGN and Bajaj Auto Foundation, establishing a collaborative framework for strengthening the scholarship programme.
The agreement covers scholarship awareness and outreach, student application support, verification of student and academic information, coordination relating to scholarship disbursement and renewal, and scholar engagement and development activities.
The partnership therefore seeks to build a more structured pathway from identifying promising women students to supporting them through their academic journey and preparing them for professional life.
The event brought together scholarship recipients and representatives of both institutions, including Rajat Moona, Director, IITGN; Pratik Mutha, Dean, Institutional Advancement, IITGN; Manish Kumar, Dean, Student Affairs, IITGN; and Sudhakar Gudipati, Vice President – CSR, Bajaj Group.
“The ultimate beneficiary being the students”
Moona underlined the shared philosophy driving the collaboration and IITGN’s efforts to create greater opportunities for women.
“Bajaj’s commitment to education and women’s participation reflects values that we strongly share at IIT Gandhinagar. The Institute has made a conscious effort to create greater opportunities for women. We deeply value this partnership and see it as a mutually supportive relationship, with the ultimate beneficiary being the students.”
The emphasis on women’s participation is significant because engineering education can have a multiplier effect: a woman entering the field does not merely gain a qualification, but potentially becomes part of the next generation of engineers, innovators, researchers, entrepreneurs and industry leaders.
Beyond a scholarship: investing in potential
For Bajaj Auto Foundation, the programme emerged from an identified gap in financial support for deserving engineering students.
Gudipati explained the thinking behind the initiative:
“We wanted to support meritorious women engineering students and encourage more women to enter the field. After extensive research, we found a gap in scholarships for engineering students, particularly those who are meritorious. Through this programme, we aim to invest in their education, provide them with wider exposure and encourage them to contribute to the country’s industrial growth. We hope to expand the programme and reach many more students in the coming years.”
That ambition gives the initiative a larger canvas than conventional scholarship support.
The objective is not simply to help a student stay in college, but to help her build the confidence, skills, exposure and professional networks required to thrive after college.
When financial support becomes confidence
The most compelling evidence of the programme’s impact came from the scholars themselves.
For Shambhavi Kumari, a second-year BTech Mechanical Engineering student at IITGN, the scholarship has eased financial pressure while strengthening her belief in her own potential.
“Receiving this scholarship makes me feel proud and valued. It has significantly reduced the financial burden on my family and, more importantly, given me confidence that someone believes in my potential. I hope to contribute to society and the nation through engineering.”
Her words capture the often-overlooked power of scholarships.
Financial assistance can remove an immediate obstacle. But the feeling that someone believes in a student’s potential can change how that student sees herself.
From scholar to ambassador
Alka Kushwaha’s journey illustrates how the programme can evolve from financial support into leadership.
A second-year BTech Electrical Engineering student at IITGN, Kushwaha is also the Student Ambassador for the scholarship programme.
“Receiving the scholarship gave me a sense of confidence that someone believes in my education and wants to see me move forward. Being selected again in my second year, and later as a Brand Ambassador for the Rupa Rahul Bajaj Scholarship, has made the journey even more meaningful. I am truly grateful to Bajaj for being a part of my journey.”
Her progression from recipient to ambassador reflects one of the programme’s most valuable possibilities — scholars becoming role models for the next cohort of women engineers.
MoU to deepen the women-in-engineering pipeline
The new MoU is expected to strengthen the institutional framework around the scholarship and create greater continuity in scholar engagement.
The collaboration will support outreach and awareness, help prospective students through the application process, facilitate verification and scholarship disbursement and renewal, and provide opportunities for ongoing scholar development.
The event also featured the felicitation of the Student Ambassador and certificate distribution, followed by a presentation by Bajaj Auto Foundation for existing scholars.
With mentorship, industry exposure, professional development and leadership opportunities incorporated into the scholarship ecosystem, the programme seeks to bridge an important gap between academic achievement and workplace readiness.
Engineering a future where women lead
India’s ambitions in manufacturing, technology and engineering require a much larger and more diverse talent pool.
Initiatives such as RRBSWE seek to make that talent pool more inclusive by ensuring that promising women students have the financial support and developmental opportunities to complete engineering education and enter professional careers.
At IITGN, the 13 scholarship recipients represent precisely that possibility.
