1,534 new COVID-19 cases in TN; 16 fatalities

Tamil Nadu logged 1,534 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, taking the overall infection count to 7,74,710, while 16 more fatalities pushed the toll to 11,655.

Recoveries continued to eclipse new infections with 1,873 people being discharged from health care facilities, taking the overall tally to 7,51,535, a health department bulletin said.

Active cases in the state stood at 11,520. Two districts, including the State capital, logged cases in triple digits with Chennai adding 467 and Coimbatore 149, while the rest were scattered across other districts. Chennai continued to top the list of cases with 2,13,417 infections out of more than 7.74 lakh in the state.

A total of 68,082 samples were tested on Wednesday, taking the cumulative total to 1,17,41,603 specimens examined so far.

Of the 16 fatalities reported, eight succumbed to the virus in private hospitals and another eight in government facilities. Chennai also topped in the number of fatalities, accounting for 3,833 of the total of 11,655 deaths.

A private lab in Krishnagiri district was accorded approval for taking up COVID-19 testing, taking the total number of facilities operating in the State to 218, of which 67 run by the government, the bulletin said.
