Tamil Nadu’s adventurous sport jallikattu began in Avaniapuram of Madurai district on Sunday. At least 23 people were injured in the jallikattu. Thirteen of the injured were admitted to Madurai Rajaji Government Medical College.

Madurai district collector Aneesh Sekhar said, “We’ve made all arrangements for smooth conduct of Jallikattu. Ensuring safety of bulls as well as players. 3 levels of barricading put to ensure that bulls play in the play arena and spectators are also protected.”
- The winners are given two-wheelers, clothes, jewels, and money, and several youths participate in the Jallikattu events at various places in Tamil Nadu during the Pongal festival.
- It is to be noted that Pongal is the biggest festival of Tamil Nadu which is held from January 15 to 18.
“We’ll follow all regulations by Supreme Court as well as government of Tamil Nadu. In Avaniyapuram, there is direction from high court. Only 25 players will be playing around (at one time). We’re expecting more than 800 players to participate,” Aneesh Sekhar said.
The Tamil Nadu government had recently notified elaborate guidelines for Jallikattu events.
The Jallikattu, considered one of the most popular bull-taming events, was being held on Sunday early morning and coincided with the Mattu Pongal.
The Jallikattu festival is considered a dangerous sport in which people injure themselves while trying to tame raging bulls. The winners are given two-wheelers, clothes, jewels, and money, and several youths participate in the Jallikattu events at various places in Tamil Nadu during the Pongal festival.
It is to be noted that Pongal is the biggest festival of Tamil Nadu which is held from January 15 to 18.
