The coronavirus tally in Gujarat rose to 4,395 on Thursday after 313 new cases were recorded during the last 24 hours, while 17 more patients died — 12 of them in Ahmedabad, said health department officials.
During the same period, 17 patients succumbed to the infection, taking the toll to 214 in the state so far, said Principal Secretary, Health, Jayanti Ravi.

Of these 17, 12 died in Ahmedabad, three in Surat and one each in Anand and Vadodara, she said.
Ravi claimed five of them had died purely due to the viral infection, while the 12 others also had comorbid conditions such as diabetes besides COVID-19.

Out of the total 214 persons who have died so far due to coronavirus in the state, as many as 149 were from Ahmedabad district alone.
Surat has witnessed 25 deaths, while in Vadodara 17 persons have succumbed to the infection till now.

These districts were followed by Bhavnagar (5), Anand (4), two each in Bharuch, Panchmaha, and Gandhinagar; and one each in Rajkot, Patan, Banaskantha, Kutch, Jamnagar, Valsad, and Botad.
She said as many as 86 patients recovered and discharged from different hospitals during the last 24 hours, taking the number of such people to 613.

Out of the 313 positive cases reported in the past 24 hours, as many as 249 new cases were reported in Ahmedabad alone, followed by Vadodara (19), Surat (13), Gandhinagar (10), Panchmahal (10) and Bhavnagar (4).
Cases were also reported in other parts of the state, including three each in Anand and Mehsana; and one each in Aravalli and Dahod.

Till now, as many as 64,007 tests for coronavirus have been conducted in Gujarat, out of which, 4,395 came positive while 59,612 turned negative, said Ravi.
Out of the total 4,395 positive cases reported so far, as many as 3,026 have emerged in Ahmedabad alone.
The situation in Surat and Vadodara is also grim as both the districts have recorded 614 and 289 cases, respectively, till now.
They were followed by Anand (74), Rajkot (58), and Gandhinagar (48).
Cases were also reported in other parts of the state, said Ravi.
Gujarat COVID-19 figures are as follows: Positive cases 4,395, new cases 313, deaths 214, discharged 613, active cases 3,568, people tested so far 64,007.
Case tally crosses 3,000-mark in Ahmedabad
The COVID-19 tally crossed the 3,000-mark in Ahmedabad on Thursday with the detection of 249 new cases, while the death toll rose to 149, health department officials said.

With the addition of 249 new cases in the last 24 hours, the coronavirus tally in Ahmedabad stood at 3,021, they said.
While 12 more people – seven men and five women – succumbed to COVID-19 in the city, taking the toll to 149, a release by the health department of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation said.
Fifty-three patients – 26 men and 27 women – recovered from the disease and were discharged from various city hospitals, it said.

The total patients who have been discharged stood at 316.
There are 2551 active cases in the city of which 35 are critical and are on ventilators, while 2516 are stable, the release said.
Out of the 12 persons who died, four had no underlying health conditions, while the eight others had other diseases like diabetes, hypertension, kidney problem, and asthma, the statement said.
Ahmedabad municipal commissioner Vijay Nehra said two trust-run hospitals of the city have signed MoUs with the civic body to treat COVID-19 patients.

Trustees of Lokhandwala Hospital in the Old City area and SMS Hospital in Chandkheda have decided to turn their hospitals into dedicated COVID-19 hospitals.
“Lokhandwala Hospital has a capacity of 50 beds, while the other hospital is of 100 beds. They will treat patients free of charge and also provide food to them two times in a day, Nehra said.
“The municipal corporation will provide PPE kits, N-95 masks, medicines, and even staff to these two hospitals,” he said.

Nehra said after the current lockdown gets over on May 3, cases are likely to increase gradually unless people strictly follow guidelines to save themselves from the infection.
He requested people to adhere to guidelines of wearing masks and maintain social distance to avoid getting infected.

Patient found dead on a bench outside Surat hospital
A 50-year-old coronavirus patient, who allegedly ran away from the COVID ward of a civil hospital in Surat city two days back, was found dead on a bench outside the medical facility on Thursday morning, police said.
A probe is underway into the matter, they said.
Preliminary inquiry and CCTV footage of the hospital indicate that the man did not go outside the hospital campus located in Khatodara area, during the last two days, an official from Khatodara police station said.
The official further said the man “secretly” walked out of the COVID ward on the night of April 28 and disappeared.
Though the police tried to search for him at every possible location, he was not found, the official said.
“As of now, we don’t know why he ran away in the middle of his treatment, where he went and how he died. We are carrying out a thorough investigation into it,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Vidhi Chaudhari said.

As per the civil hospital records, the man was a resident of the Salabatpura area and got admitted to the hospital on April 21 after he tested positive for coronavirus.
Before that, his wife had also tested positive for coronavirus and was admitted to the same hospital, another official said, adding that she is currently undergoing treatment at the medical facility.
CM orders welfare measures for workers
Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has taken several decisions to ensure the welfare of workers and labourers amidst the lockdown.
Providing details of the same, Secretary to CM Ashwani Kumar said, “The third phase of SSJA has been started on April 20 and will be completed by June 10, 2020. The CM has instructed the concerned departments to undertake 14,694 works worth Rs.414 crores. 88 works in 33 districts have so far been completed to date, and 46,731 workers have got employment from the same. In addition to that, the water holding capacity of 4 lakh 69 thousand 980 cubics has been made available through these works. Around 1 lakh 11 thousand workers have got employment through MNREGA in 33 districts. The administration is ensuring safety measures while undertaking these works.”

25,175 labourers have resumed their duties at 633 government projects. In addition to that, 22,077 workers have the facility of food and accommodation at work at 243 project sites in megacities.

Those wandering at night will face strict legal action: DGP
Director-General of Police Shivanand Jha said that it has come to the notice of the police that the lockdown enforced to prevent transmission of the virus is not being abided by in certain areas. He cautioned people against roaming around at night as this can lead to strict actions being taken against them for violation of lockdown.

A special action plan has been laid down to find citizens roaming around during the night. They will be identified using thermal drones. And surveillance using thermal drones with night vision will be done in areas declared as containment zone in Ahmedabad. There will also be intensive patrolling by the cops on horses. Under this plan, the police have also been instructed to use private vehicles as people run away on spotting police vans or jeeps from far.

Based on the inputs received from the Intelligence Bureau, 8 cases of lockdown breach were registered yesterday while 590 cases were registered across the state during the month.
Strict adherence to social-distancing is the need of the hour. The police have received complaints on police helpline number 100 of areas where social-distancing is not being followed. About 74 crimes have been registered in the state through this medium.
Talking about attacks on Corona Warriors, Jha said the police will not tolerate this act and strict actions will be taken against the attackers. The attackers will be booked under PASA.
Throwing light on the significant use of drones and CCTV during the lockdown, Jha said that 303 crimes have been registered through drones. A total of 19,608 people have been arrested for 10,098 offenses to date. Meanwhile, under the Smart City and VISWAS project, 124 individuals have been arrested for 97 crimes reported through the CCTV network tallying up to 3,016 individuals for 2,005 crimes. Additionally, 39 crimes have been registered so far and 64 people have been arrested through CCTVs in residential societies.
Similarly, through social media, in connection with spreading fake messages and rumors, so far 479 crimes have been registered and 938 accused have been arrested. 913 and 537 offenses have been registered, respectively, through videography and automatic number plate recognition (ANPR). 334 offenses have been registered so far with mounted cameras special ‘Prahari’ Van.
Cases that have been registered so far include 2,715 of the violation of lockdown, 962 against violating home quarantine, and 506 other cases. 10,488 vehicles have been seized in the state, added Jha. Police have released 1,14,950 detained vehicles so far.
