At least 60 people died, many injured and over 100 missing after a bridge over Machhu river collapsed in Morbi district on Sunday. PM Narendra Modi has announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF (Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund) for the next of kin of each of those who lost their lives in the mishap in Morbi. The injured would be given Rs 50,000.

CM Bhupendra Patel has announced Rs 4 lakh as compensation to the families of the deceased.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the families of each of those who died in a bridge collapse in Gujarat’s Morbi city.

Modi also spoke with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and other officials regarding the incident. He sought urgent mobilisation of teams for rescue operations, according to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
“PM Narendra Modi has announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF (Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund) for the next of kin of each of those who lost their lives in the mishap in Morbi. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000,” the PMO said in a series of tweets.

The prime minister has asked that the situation be closely and continuously monitored, and all possible help be extended to those affected, it added.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also spoke to Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi and other officials regarding the accident.
“I am deeply saddened by the accident in Morbi. I have spoken to Harsh Sanghavi, Minister of State for Home, Gujarat and other officials in this regard. Local administration is engaged in relief work with full readiness, NDRF is also reaching the spot soon. The administration has been directed to provide immediate treatment to the injured,” Shah tweeted in Hindi.
As per eyewitnesses, there were several women and children on the hanging bridge when it snapped. There are reports that several people have suffered injuries. They are being rushed to hospitals.
Expressing grief over the incident, President Droupadi Murmu tweeted, “The tragedy in Morbi, Gujarat has left me worried. My thoughts and prayers are with the affected people. Relief and rescue efforts will bring succour to the victims.”

મોરબીની દુર્ઘટનામાં જીવ ગુમાવનાર નાગરિકોના પરિવારજનો પ્રત્યે સંવેદના વ્યક્ત કરું છું. રાજ્ય સરકાર પ્રત્યેક મૃતકના પરિવારજનને ચાર લાખ રૂપિયા અને ઇજાગ્રસ્તોને ૫૦,૦૦૦ રૂપિયાની સહાય આપશે.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel expressed his condolences over the incident and announced compensation to the families of those who died in the tragedy.
“I express my condolences to the families of the citizens who lost their lives in the tragedy of Morbi. The state government will provide Rs 4 lakh to the family of each deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured,” CM Bhupendra Patel tweeted.
Several people fell in the river after the bridge collapsed on Sunday. Rescue operations are presently underway. The administration, with the help of locals, are engaged in rescuing people who fell in the river after the bridge collapse.
As per initial reports, the cable bridge was restarted five days ago after renovation.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Pate has announced that he is cancelling all his engagements for today and will be leaving for Morbi.
“I am leaving for Morbi by canceling all my upcoming events today. Direct monitoring of the situation and necessary coordination with the system will be achieved by reaching the site in person,” the chief minister said in a tweet.
Meanwhile, Morbi’s former MLA Kantilal Amrutiya told the local media that he and his team had fished out at least 8 bodies and more than 80 persons are trapped in the Machhu river, after the bridge collapsed.
The bridge was closed for the last two years and was reopened after renovation just a day ago. As it was Sunday and Diwali vacations are on, more than 500 people, including children, had come to see the bridge when the accident occurred, Morbi city Congress chief Rajeshbhai Kavar said.
Morbi MLA and Minister Brajesh Merja said that due to night and water flow in the river, locals and fire brigade teams are finding difficulty in carrying out rescue operations. Fire teams from surrounding districts too were rushed to Morbi to speed up the rescue work.
3 NDRF teams rushed to spot, another to be airlifted
The National Disaster Response Force has rushed three teams to Gujarat’s Morbi district where at least 32 people were killed after a suspension bridge over a river collapsed.
NDRF Director General (DG) Atul Karwal said that the three teams have been moved from state capital Gandhinagar and Vadodara.
Another team will be airlifted in some time and it will move via road from Rajkot to the accident site, he said.
