The Indo-Thailand Workshop on AI-Driven Innovations commenced at the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) on Monday. This five-day international workshop aims to promote knowledge exchange in the rapidly advancing field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and is being attended by students from several prestigious universities across Thailand.

The workshop will delve into key areas of AI, including computer vision, where participants will explore algorithms that enable machines to interpret visual information; natural language processing, which focuses on enhancing human-computer communication through spoken and written language; and sustainable development, emphasising how AI can contribute to environmentally friendly practices.

Prof Rajat Moona, Director, IITGN, warmly welcomed the students, highlighting the rich history of India and the significance of Gujarat. “We are excited to have you here. A variety of academic and cultural programs have been curated for everyone to enjoy, and we look forward to a fruitful exchange of knowledge.”

Prof Nithin V George, TEOCO Chair Professor of Electrical Engineering, IITGN, remarked, “This workshop is not just an academic event; it is part of a broader initiative to strengthen ties between India and Thailand. A key milestone was the launch of the double degree program with Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand in 2024. This workshop serves as another step toward enhancing bilateral learning and collaboration between our countries.”

Adding on to Prof George’s remarks, Prof Amit Prashant, Dean, Research and Development, IITGN, stated: “In addition to academic growth, we are working on developing an internship program that will allow Thai students to experience our state-of-the-art labs at IITGN. We are also in the process of developing degree programs in partnership with Thai universities.”

“This workshop is not just a learning opportunity for students from Thailand, but also for Indian students learning about Thai culture. We hope that new friendships are made, and the visitors go home with wonderful memories of India.” said Prof Sushobhan Sen, Assistant Professor, Civil Engineering, IITGN.

Prof Kabeer Jasuja, Dr Dinesh O Shah Chair Associate Professor, Chemical Engineering, IITGN, encouraged the students to ask questions and make the most out of the workshop. “We are thrilled to host you. We encourage you to ask as many questions as possible and take full advantage of this opportunity. We have also designed a summer internship program for Thai students, covering research areas across engineering, sciences, and beyond. The internship program is scheduled during summer and allows the students to spend from two to ten weeks at IIT Gandhinagar. Student interns from Thailand would also be supported through a fellowship named Sabarmati-Mekong Scholarship” he noted.

Dr Korrakot, Director, Chiang Mai International Engineering School, expressed enthusiasm for the workshop, stating, “This program holds great potential for our students. We hope to forge lasting connections with Indian peers and expand our network through this workshop.”

Prof Shanmuganathan Raman, Jibaben Patel Chair Professor, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering, IITGN, highlighted the diverse expertise of the workshop’s speakers, including both industry professionals and academic experts. “We are fortunate to have IITGN alumni from leading organisations sharing their insights. This is an excellent opportunity for participants to gain first-hand knowledge from these professionals about their time at IITGN.”

The workshop will feature distinguished speakers from top organisations, including Google, Samsung, and Nvidia. Key sessions include topics such as “Visualizing the Thought Process of LLMs,” “Compact Domain-Specific Language Models with Infinite Context Length,” “Resilient by Design: Networks, Algorithms, and Physics-Guided AI for Hydrometeorological Extremes,” “Applications of AI in Diagnostics and Rehabilitation,” “Applications of AI for Cybersecurity,” “Games and AI,” and more.
