Poetry has always found its way into the world’s quietest corners—classrooms and cafés, crowded cities and small towns, solitary notebooks and vibrant poetry circles. Now, The Punch Magazine is opening a larger window for those voices to travel beyond their familiar worlds.

The magazine has announced “50 Indian Poets Under 50”, a new national literary initiative aimed at discovering, celebrating and bringing greater attention to some of the most distinctive voices writing poetry today. Indian citizens and Persons of Indian Origin are invited to submit five original poems that demonstrate the strength of their craft, imagination and individual voice.

The initiative carries an expansive literary invitation: lyric poetry, narrative verse, experimental writing, prose poetry and spoken word are all welcome. The emphasis, The Punch Magazine says, is not on literary schools or labels, but on the power and originality of the work.

“What matters is not the school you belong to, but the strength of your work,” the magazine says, making the contest as much an invitation to established practitioners as to poets waiting for their first significant literary platform.

A poetry platform that has been years in the making

The initiative builds on The Punch Magazine’s long-standing engagement with poetry. Over the past decade, the magazine has published anthologies bringing together celebrated and emerging poets from India and across the world, featuring more than 500 poets and creating space for diverse voices, languages and poetic traditions.

With 50 Poets Under 50, the magazine hopes to extend that literary journey through a new anthology that brings established poets and compelling new voices into the same frame—giving readers an opportunity to encounter poetry that might otherwise remain confined to smaller literary circles.

The invitation is therefore simple but profound: “If poetry is where you speak most honestly, we would like to read your work.”

FROM Jussawalla to Gulzar: A formidable literary legacy

The Punch Magazine’s earlier anthologies have established a formidable literary lineage.

Its 2021 anthology featured eminent poets including Adil Jussawalla, Arvind Krishna Mehrotra, Jayanta Mahapatra, Keki N. Daruwalla, Gieve Patel, Arundhathi Subramaniam, Anjum Hasan, C.P. Surendran, Sudeep Sen, Ranjit Hoskote, Rukmini Bhaya Nair, Tabish Khair and Tishani Doshi, among others. It also featured an interview with Gulzar on A Poem a Day.

The 2022 anthology widened the conversation across India and the subcontinent, bringing together voices including Afzal Ahmed Syed, Kishwar Naheed, Meena Kandasamy, K. Srilata, Perveen Saket, Rochelle Potkar, Sophia Naz, Subodh Deshpande, Sukrita Paul Kumar, Gauri Awasthi, Ishrat Afreen, Karuna Ezara Parikh and Leeya Mehta, among others.

The 2023 anthology continued that spirit of literary openness, featuring Abha Iyengar, Ambika Ananth, Anu Majumdar, Cal Freeman, Indu Parvathi, Kankana Basu, Neera Kashyap, Pallavi Padma-Uday, Sanket Mhatre, Sonnet Mondal, Sreelekha Kopparambil and Zachary Tichauer Bushnell, among others.

The magazine has also deliberately looked beyond conventional literary circles. Actor, author and poet Lisa Ray, for instance, featured on the cover of its 2018 issue.

A call to the voices India has yet to hear

At its heart, 50 Indian Poets Under 50 is more than an anthology project. It is an attempt to widen the literary map—to discover poems being written away from the traditional centres of literary attention and create a bridge between emerging talent, established poets, publishers, readers and the wider cultural ecosystem.

For young and mid-career poets, inclusion could offer visibility and a national platform. For literary readers, it promises a snapshot of contemporary Indian poetry in its many forms. For cultural institutions, publishers, educators and patrons, it offers an opportunity to engage with a new generation of writers whose work is shaping the evolving literary imagination of India.

In an age of instant content and fleeting attention, the initiative makes a compelling case for something slower and deeper—the poem that stays, disturbs, illuminates or quietly changes the way one sees the world.
