ALIGARH, JAN 27
Hundreds of students of Aligarh Muslim University have been protesting for the past several hours seeking the release of three students detained by the police on the initiative of the university administration.
In protest against the detention, the students have blocked the Purani Chungi road. The three students were arrested following the ‘go back’ slogans raised against Vice-Chancellor Tariq Mansoor during the Republic Day function on Sunday.
The students Mujtaba Faraz, Tahir Azmi, and Siddharth Gulati were detained by the university proctors and later handed over to the Police.
After the detention, students blocked the Proctor’s Office and demanded the release of the three students by 5 pm. They also warned that if they were not released, they would block the District Magistrate’s Office. As the detained students were not released by 5 pm, hundreds of students marched along the University Road and went on to block the Chungi road which connects Aligarh city and Jamalpur. Due to the students’ protest, police released two students. But students urged that unless the police release the remaining detained student, they would not remove the blockade. Meanwhile, the police along with RAF personnel in large numbers have been deployed at the site.
Commenting on the development, former president of AMU Students Union, Maskoor Ahmad Usmani has urged AMU alumni “to take note of the authoritative regime of the AMU administration.”
“I request the distinguished @AMUNetwork alumni to kindly take note of the authoritative regime of the AMU administration in the Campus. The 3 students have been detained by AMU proctor and later they were handed to UP Police. The entire campus is locked down and on the road,” tweeted Usmani.
