MEHSANA, OCT 12

Nine labourers were killed and one injured as soil caved in at a construction site in Mehsana district in Gujarat, reports say, citing police officials.

Rescue efforts have been ongoing since the collapse, with emergency personnel working tirelessly to recover the bodies and locate any survivors.

The incident took place when the labourers were digging a pit for an underground tank for a factory at Jasalpur village near Kadi town, approximately 37 km from the district headquarters. The under-construction wall collapsed and the labourers were buried alive under loose soil.

The incident took place at around 1:45 pm at a private company’s building construction site, Mehsana District Development Officer Dr Hasrat Jasmine said

“As per our information, 9-10 people were trapped, out of which 6 bodies have been recovered,” Dr Jasmine said. A 19-year-old boy was pulled out alive, offering hope to rescuers. Based on his account, there were 8-9 workers on site, and efforts continue to free the remaining 2-3 people. “We pray to God that we rescue them alive,” she said.

Many workers were digging a pit for an underground tank that was supposed to be used by a factory in Jasalpur village. While digging the pit, loose soil caved in, burying them alive, inspector Prahaladsinh Vaghela of Kadi police said. “Five bodies have been recovered, and three to four other labourers are feared buried. A rescue operation is going on,” the inspector said.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragic incident, calling it “extremely sad.”

“The accident caused by the wall collapse in Mehsana, Gujarat is extremely sad. My deepest condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in this. May God give them the strength to bear this pain. Along with this, I wish for the speedy recovery of the injured. Under the supervision of the state government, the local administration is engaged in providing all possible help to the victims,”PM Modi wrote on X.

PM Modi also wished for the speedy recovery of the injured. He assured that the local administration, under the state’s supervision, is providing all possible assistance to the victims.

The Prime Minister Office also announced ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to those injured from Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).
