The Golden Rock Railway Workshop (GOC), Tiruchchirappalli has bagged the 22nd National Award for Excellence in Energy Management from the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). The award was conferred on it for having adopted and implemented various energy conservation measures, says a Southern Railway release.

The National Awards for Excellence in Energy Management is instituted by CII, to catalyze significant and innovative practices in the energy efficiency sector. CII conducts this annual event to recognize and award excellence in energy management among the industrial sector and railway workshops across the country and facilitate sharing of information on best practices & technologies, the release added.
GOC Workshop is the only workshop of the Indian Railways to have received the award this year. The workshop has bagged the prestigious award twice so far.
The 93-year-old Golden Rock Workshop has adopted best energy conservation practices and technologies such as:
- GOC increased its production by 19.42% despite the challenges faced due to unprecedented COVID lockdown
- The energy conservation measures have led to reduction of electrical and thermal energy consumption by 25.6 %
- IOT (Internet of things) based condition monitoring system has been installed in 3 electrical substations and 45 machines. The system has also been installed in one 3 tier AC Coach now running in Trichy – Howrah Express rake.
- Two MIYAWAKI gardens were developed inside the workshop consisting of 4000 saplings inclusive of 500 saplings of Bheema Bamboos
- 87% reduction in carbon footprint was achieved by the workshop during the year
- In movement of Coach bogies, energy saving has been effected upto 46% through movement by Rail instead of by Road between workshop and Divisions which also resulted in 67% reduction in CO2 emission
