- The patient was a senior citizen with three incomplete surgeries conducted on her
- This is a classic case of how wrong treatment can be detrimental to a patient and can almost cost life itself

In a rare case of a 60-year-old with a recurrent granulosa cell tumor (type of ovarian cancer), the oncology team at Marengo CIMS Hospital conducted yet another exemplary treatment surgery to save the life of the patient. The surgery to remove a 7-kg mass was conducted by Dr Nitin Singhal, Consultant Surgical Oncology, Marengo CIMS Hospital and his team, says a hospital release on Wednesday.
Chand Rani, a 60-year female, had come to Marengo CIMS Hospital with a large mass30 x28 x 25 cm and a large incision. She had been operated thrice at other hospitals in the last 18 months for the same medical problem, with incomplete surgical procedures every time, in the several lines of chemotherapy sessions she had undergone. With little success earlier, she was advised by several people that her condition was complex and untreatable. She was also advised that any further treatment on her would require multi-visceral resections along with multiple adhesions due to previous surgeries.
Granulosa cell tumors are rare, usually slow-growing ovarian tumors. They grow in the tissues around the ovaries. The production of excessive hormones leads to high estrogen and these high estrogen levels may result in abnormal bleeding, irregular periods or a larger abdomen. The first line of treatment is usually surgery to remove the tumor.
Despite all the challenges, the team of doctors at Marengo CIMS Hospital removed the mass which was around 7 kg and required 4 bowel anastomosis and colorectal. The patient recovered well, despite her age and her histology reports revealed that the mass is completely excised granulosa cell tumor adult type and patient would not be requiring any systemic therapy.
This case highlights that granulosa cell tumors the treatment is complete surgical excision even if it is a complex one as there was no respond to chemotherapy and radiation and a complete surgical excision has the potential of not only treating but curing the cancer.
Dr Nitin Singhal, Oncologist, Marengo CIMS Hospital says, “Cancers of the ovaries or the Granulosa cell tumors are rare. They account for about 5% of primary ovarian tumors. Primary ovarian tumors are tumors that start in your ovary. In the case of this patient, her age and unusual production of hormones could have led to serious outcomes which we were able to divert to save the patient’s life. The size of the tumor, the location and the previous surgeries contributed to challenges.”
Dr Raajiv Singhal, MD & CEO, Marengo Asia Healthcare says, “Marengo CIMS Hospital had set another benchmark with correct understanding of the patient’s condition and extending the right treatment. In our commitment to treating cancers in men and women this becomes one of the rare forms of cancer that we have the clinical excellence to treat. Marengo CIMS continues to bring global expertise and clinical excellence to the society we treat.”
Granulosa cell tumors constitute less than 5 % of all ovarian tumors. The most common symptoms include early puberty for affected young girls, an increase in abdomen size or irregularities of menstrual cycles in premenopausal women, and abnormal uterine bleeding in postmenopausal women. What needs to be understood is many a times people go on a wrong treatment path due to lack of knowledge, awareness and availability of right treatment.
