“Even after 75 years of Independence, we have yet to come to a conclusion on the health needs of the women. Most of the policy makers and public health professionals say there is no proper data or statistics on other diseases suffered by women due to various socio-economic and cultural factors, where women give themselves less priority when it comes to their own health. This situation has to be improved, if we want to create overall wellbeing of women marching towards Ayushman Bharath,’’ she said.
Dr Soundararajan recommended focus on physical and mental well-being of women and girls via exercise, nutrition, and yoga from childhood. She suggested special women’s ICUs in rural hospitals and more mobile health units in remote rural and tribal areas.
For changing the health seeking behavior of the women we have to create more awareness on the health services provided by the govt., and should also improve the accessibility of services in rural and urban areas by operating mobile medical units.
According to the governor, when she was practicing she observed that there was more number of boy’s data than girls in the OP. On her personal enquiry of OP registry and staff she found out, due to gender disparity girls have does not get any priority by their families and they are brought to the hospital, when they are very sick. She also highlighted the reason for girls drop out from school due to lack of toilets.
She mentioned on a visit to a school time back, she wanted to check the tiffin boxes of the children to know, what kind of food children are given by their parents. I was very astonished to find that most of the boxes had burgers, chips, puffs, biscuits and snacks from outside. There was no home food at all. She said calculating currency not but calculating the calories is very important. She appealed to the parents to take utmost care in proving nutritious and home food.
She also recommended that families should prioritise the women health and always allocate separate budget for them.
