Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Commissioner and Additional Chief Secretary J Radhakrishnan on Wednesday hailed that media has been playing a major role in help propagating the programs of central and state governments among the people.
He was speaking at a two-day workshop for the public relation officers organised by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) and the Central Bureau of Communication (CBC) recently.
Kickstarting the workshop, GCC Commissioner J Radhakrishnan, said, “Media today has evolved in many ways. The news is also spreading very fast. The programs of the Central and State Governments can be easily carried through the media, which has gained a lot of attention among the people. Public relations officers should make full use of this.”
“In general, there are programs for all people, especially for women, transgenders and the elderly. It is very important to bring these to the right people. They ought to work in tandem with students, farmers, community leaders and political figures in this initiatives,” the commissioner added.
He further stressed that “Although the efforts of experts and governments were on one side, the awareness among the people was the most important factor that helped contain the Corona virus during the pandemic. Media has a major responsibility in creating this awareness. Therefore, according to the changing environment, all types of media should be used to convey good and useful information to the people.”

Director General (I/C) Southern Region MIB & CBC, V Palanisamy, in his presidentail address, said, “Communication on awreness is very essential to transform the behavior among people. Studies show that only 16 percent of respondents are reluctant to adopt new practices. As the remaining 84 percent of the people are either immediately or gradually receptive, it is the task of public relations officers to use them to bring about a change in lifestyle.”
The Director also highlighted that under the Prime Minister’s Yashasvi Scheme, Class IX to XI students get a scholarship of Rs 75,000 to Rs 1,25,000. It is very important to create awareness about such schemes that benefit members of the poor and needy families.
Addressing on the aim of the workshop, Additional Director General of PIB & CBC M Annadurai said, “The Southern Region has conducted 70 events last year to create awareness on the Central government schemes among the masses. The benefits of welfare programs have been extended to thousands of people through various forms of programs such as photo exhibitions, music, singing, events, seminars etc.”
He said that apart from the central government’s schemes, this year was the International Year of Millets and because it was related to nutrition, its benefits were explained to the people in detail. Similarly, Annadurai mentioned that the CBC is also promoting an environment-friendly lifestyle called LIFE.
He also said that due to the cleanliness drive carried out in the last 10 years, there is no open defecation even in rural areas. At the end of the inaugural event, a short film on the work of CBC was screened.
Public Relations Officers from the Southern Region, including Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands participated in this two-day workshop.
