The Narsinh Mehta Award, one of the highest honours in Gujarati literature, will be presented to four accomplished Gujarati poets on the auspicious occasion of Sharad Purnima on October 28.
Instituted in 1999 under the inspiration of renowned spiritual leader and Ramcharitmanas exponent, Morari Bapu, the Narsinh Mehta Award is a tribute to Gujarati language authors and poets. It is conferred by the Adyakavi Narsinh Mehta Sahitya Nidhi Trust, Junagadh, to recognise their outstanding contributions to Gujarati literature.
The award is traditionally presented annually, but it was not presented since 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Adyakavi Narsinh Mehta Sahitya Nidhi Trust’s selection committee has picked four Gujarati poets to receive the award for the years 2020 to 2023.
Jawahar Bakshi has been chosen as the recipient of the award for the year 2020, and Rajesh Vyas ‘Miskin’ for the year 2021. Yagnesh Dave and Udayan Thakker have been honoured as recipients of this prestigious Award for the years 2022 and 2023, respectively.
Each of these four award recipients has made significant contributions to Gujarati literature through their writings. They join a distinguished list of authors and poets who have received this honour in the past.
The awards ceremony will take place on Sharad Purnima, October 28, at Shri Kailash Gurukul in Mahuva taluka of Bhavnagar. The recipients will be presented with an idol of Narsinh Mehta along with a cash prize of Rs. 1,510,00 in the presence of Morari Bapu and prominent figures from the literary world.
