The Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) is organising Comics Conclave 2.0 on Saturday and Sunday – March 16 and 17, 2024 in its campus. Following the success of the first edition of Comics Conclave in 2023, the Institute is all set to host an exhilarating gathering of comics enthusiasts, artists, writers, and scholars this year.
This two-day event will feature several diverse sessions on visual storytelling by renowned comics artists, writers, and publishers from across India. The lineup will include Appupen (George Mathen), renowned Graphic novelist and Artist; Milee Ashwarya, Publisher and Senior Vice President of Penguin India; Samhita Arni, Popular Indian Writer; Anupam Roy, Artist, Visual storyteller, and Activist; Labani Jangi, Artist and Scholar; Vishwajyoti Ghosh, Visiting Faculty, Visual Arts, Ashoka University; Debkumar Mitra, Comics editor and Educator; Pinaki De, Book designer and Comics scholar and Avni Sethi, Artist, Founder of Conflictorium.
The Comics Conclave 2.0 aims to explore the language of our complex world through visual narrative. Some of the highlights of this year’s Comics Conclave will include book launch of ‘A Dream Machine’ by Appupen, ‘Moral Pandemic’ by Sarnath Banerjee and film screening of ‘The Land of Good Intentions’ and ‘The Eternal Swamp’, a theatrical comics lecture by Abhijit Banerjee (MIT) and Sarnath Banerjee supported by MIT-CAST. Additionally, attendees will have the opportunity to engage in talks and interactive sessions led by celebrated graphic novelists, artists, and academic scholars, exploring themes such as ‘AI and Comics,’ ‘History and Politics through Comics’, and ‘Famine, Partition, Human Suffering’.
Furthermore, workshops led by Anupam Roy, Debkumar Mitra, and Argha Manna will offer hands-on learning experiences on the ‘Craft of making comics and Graphic Novel’ and ‘Art and politics drawing banners’.
The event will also feature an exhibition showcasing graphic narratives from renowned artists, comics’ scholars, students from IIT Gandhinagar, and indie artists from Ahmedabad, along with rare pages from history, including comics pages on India’s Freedom Struggle movement published in vernacular magazines. This convergence of creativity and scholarship promises to be an enriching experience for all attendees.
