CC Sheth College of Commerce organised a session on ‘Laws Against Domestic Violence’ for students on Monday. Kunjal Vyas, a legal expert who specialises in domestic violence cases, facilitated the session.

A part of Navgujarat Group of Colleges, CC Sheth College of Commerce is a five-decades old institution, dedicated to excellence in commerce education.
The session was especially designed for female students, with an aim to educate and make them aware of their legal rights and the legal protection available to them against domestic violence. The session also enlightened the students about the available resources to seek help if they face domestic abuse or they know someone who is facing it.
Vyas elaborated upon five key topics – the definition and forms of domestic violence, the legal framework, protection mechanisms, support services and awareness and prevention.
She explained in detail about the overview of domestic violence that encompasses physical, emotional, sexual, and economic abuse, with examples of different scenarios. The speaker also outlined the legal framework in India and elaborated upon ‘Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005’. She spoke in detail about the Sections 294 and 509 of the Indian Penal Code, which is against eve teasing.
As the session progressed, Vyas further spoke about the process of filing complaints, seeking legal assistance and protection mechanisms and relief available to survivors of domestic violence.
The session also highlighted the importance of seeking support from family, friends, and relevant support organizations. Students were made aware of the various organisations as well as helplines available to aid victims of domestic violence.
Students were encouraged to spread awareness about domestic violence and its consequences within their communities. The speaker also discussed in detail about the strategies for preventing domestic violence and promoting healthy relationships.
