The launch event was held at Annamar Swamy temple premises in Kangeyam, Tiruppur district. Minister for Tamil Development, Information & Publicity launched the event by planting saplings and distributing them to farmers.
Speaking at the event, Cauvery Calling Coordinator Tamilmaran said, “We have a long tradition and experience in tree planting. We have been active since 2000. The movement, initiated by Ayya Kalaignar with the planting of a sapling in 2006, has grown to worldwide recognition today. Four UN organizations have endorsed this movement.
Through Cauvery Calling, we are promoting tree-based agriculture globally. Planting trees alongside farming enhances farmers’ economy, soil fertility, and groundwater levels. By linking the environment and the economy, Sadhguru provided this initiative. The UN has recognized Cauvery Calling as the right solution for tropical countries.”
Minister Saminathan further said, “When Kalaignar Karunanidhi was the Chief Minister, a tree planting event by the Isha was held in Guindy, Chennai. I vividly remember it because I participated in that event. He proudly highlighted the planting of trees along the roadsides by the Highways Department. I was proud to be the minister of that department at the time.”
“Karunanidhi, as the Chief Minister, said he would appreciate and commend those who planted a sapling instead of bringing gifts, even if they didn’t visit him in person. In the current harsh climate with increasing heat, planting and maintaining saplings is the primary responsibility of every individual, not just such movements. I extend my congratulations and best wishes to the Cauvery Calling movement.”
Launched in 2019, the Cauvery Calling movement aims to restore the Cauvery River by increasing green cover in the Cauvery basin areas of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The initiative promotes tree-based agriculture on farmlands, which improves soil quality, enhances water retention capacity, and increases farmers’ incomes. The movement offers free technical assistance to farmers for planting and maintaining trees.
Cauvery Calling personnel visit farmlands to provide advice on selecting tree species suitable for the soil, water management, weed management, and intercropping. For further information and sapling requirements, farmers can contact 80009 80009.
