NE ENVIRONMENT BUREAU
GANDHINAGAR, SEPT 25

In a landmark step towards sustainable urban development and community wellness, Zydus Foundation and Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to transform and maintain the Khoraj public park — now named Zydus GMC Garden. Spread across 55,000 sqm, the park is envisioned as a model eco-friendly and inclusive urban space.

The MoU was formally signed by J. N. Vaghela, IAS, Commissioner, GMC, and Meha Patel, Vice Chairperson, Zydus Foundation, in the presence of Miraben Patel, Mayor, GMC, along with senior officials, including Gaurangbhai Vyas, Standing Committee Chairman, Anilsinh Vaghela, Garden Samiti Chairman, and B. R. Ahir, Deputy Municipal Commissioner.

Commending the initiative, Mayor Miraben Patel said the collaboration sets a strong example of how public–private partnerships can create greener cities and healthier communities. Commissioner J. N. Vaghela highlighted the park’s thoughtful design features that align with both health and environmental goals.

Speaking on behalf of Zydus Foundation, Meha Patel said, “Zydus is dedicated to life, and an important part of this is community wellness. Together with GMC, we are re-creating a space that nurtures wellness, strengthens community bonds, and reaffirms our commitment to building healthier and happier communities. The park has unique features like the first dedicated cycling track within a public park, age-specific play areas, a yoga deck, and sculptures by local artists to showcase regional talent.”

Adding to this, Gaurang Vyas, Chairman of the Standing Committee, described the initiative as “highly effective and innovative,” noting that it would serve as a model PPP for Gandhinagar and beyond.

As part of its CSR commitment, Zydus Foundation will maintain the park for seven years, transforming it into a vibrant, eco-friendly, and inclusive space.

Planned features include:

  • Inclusive design with age-specific activity zones and Braille navigation maps for the visually challenged
  • Nature-focused landscaping with native trees, butterfly gardens, and input from botanical experts
  • Health and wellness zones such as a yoga deck, zen garden, and cycling track
  • Community and cultural elements like sculptures by local artists, a maze garden, and gazebos
  • Sustainability-focused water features including an artificial lake with a bridge

With this collaboration, Zydus Foundation and GMC are not only reimagining urban green spaces but also setting the stage for Gandhinagar to lead the way in sustainable, inclusive, and wellness-driven urban development.
