Truth on trial in the age of deepfakes: The ‘Fake Arrest of Sadhguru’ and the urgent call for digital responsibility

R ARIVANANTHAM
CHENNAI, OCT 24

In a worrying digital-age development, the online circulation of a fabricated video allegedly showing spiritual leader Sadhguru’s arrest has exposed how quickly misinformation can spread — and how critical it is for social media platforms, regulators and individual users to act responsibly.

Fake Arrest, Real Consequences

A single-judge bench of the Delhi High Court on October 14 directed Google LLC (owner of YouTube) to deploy its technological tools and remove advertisements and videos that falsely depict Sadhguru’s arrest using AI-generated images and deep-fakes.

  • Delhi High Court cracks down on AI-generated misinformation; directs Google to remove fake arrest ads exploiting Sadhguru’s image
  • Incident exposes how deepfakes can manipulate faith and trust, urging a collective awakening on digital ethics
  • Fake arrest video sparks nationwide concern over unchecked use of AI and its potential to destroy reputations overnight

These fake adverts, some of which falsely claim he has been arrested, are reportedly being used to lure viewers into scams and misleading investment schemes.

The court emphasised that Google must explain via affidavit any technical limitations if it cannot fully comply with the directive.

Why This Matters: Trust, Reputation & Fraud

  • The misuse of Sadhguru’s name and image undermines public trust in digital content, and damages both personal reputation and institutional credibility.
  • A case in Bengaluru saw a 57-year-old woman defrauded of ₹3.75 crore after believing a deep-fake video of Sadhguru promoting an investment app.
  • The incident underscores the growing sophistication of AI-generated content, which can fabricate entirely false narratives (like an arrest) and disseminate them widely.

The Social Media Responsibility Imperative

  1. Platform accountability

Platforms must proactively detect, remove or label deep-fakes and click-bait adverts that exploit reputation or trust. The court’s order underlines that intermediary guidelines require technology-based measures to identify duplicate or evolving fake content.

  1. Regulator enforcement

Regulators should monitor how well digital-platforms implement their own policies. Mere policy existence isn’t enough — enforcement must follow.

  1. User vigilance

Individuals must treat sensational content – especially “breaking” claims of arrest, death or scandal – with caution. Verification (via trusted sources) before sharing is essential.

  1. Media literacy

The public needs better awareness of how deep-fakes work, and how to distinguish credible from manipulated content. Social media literacy must be part of education.

What This Means Going Forward

  • Digital platforms now face increasing legal scrutiny for failure to curtail misuse of AI deep-fakes.
  • False narratives like a “fake arrest” can have ripple consequences — from reputational harm to financial scams to erosion of democratic discourse.
  • If unchecked, such false content may destabilise public faith in online information, with wide societal implications.
  • The case sets a precedent — not just for Sadhguru, but for any individual or organisation whose name or likeness might be misused.

In sum, the incident is a powerful reminder that in the digital-age, fake news is no longer just words — it can be fully fabricated video and audio. The responsibility lies across the ecosystem: platforms, regulators and users alike. Each must do their part to ensure that content shared and consumed is rooted in truth and integrity.
