In a landmark step towards building a greener and more climate-resilient Tamil Nadu, the State Government has launched the Palm Seed Plantation Mission–2025, a mass environmental initiative to expand tree cover and promote sustainable rural development. The mission targets the plantation of over one crore palm seeds across the State, with every village panchayat entrusted to plant 5,000 seeds.
Since its launch on September 16, 2025, the campaign has witnessed overwhelming public response. As of October 23, more than 72 lakh palm seeds have been planted across 38 districts, coordinated by the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Forests, the Green Tamil Nadu Mission, district administrations, NGOs, and thousands of citizen volunteers.
- Over 1 crore palm seeds to be planted across 38 districts with tech-enabled transparency through Udhavi App
- Isha Foundation and several NGOs strengthen the mission with large-scale plantation drives and farmer incentives
- Initiative aims to boost rural livelihoods, groundwater conservation, and climate resilience across Tamil Nadu
Each plantation is geo-tagged and photo-documented through the Udhavi App, ensuring full transparency, monitoring, and community ownership. Participants receive digital certificates of recognition from the government for their contributions to this green movement.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin noted, “Palm trees are symbols of resilience — they protect our soil, conserve water, and sustain livelihoods. Through this mission, we are not just planting trees; we are sowing hope for future generations.”
The mission has drawn strong participation from Isha Foundation, which has been a long-time advocate of mass afforestation through its Cauvery Calling and Rally for Rivers initiatives. Working alongside government departments, Isha and several NGOs are mobilising volunteers, offering saplings, and helping farmers adopt tree-based agroforestry models to enhance soil fertility and income diversification.
Environment and Climate Change Minister Siva V. Meyyanathan added, “We are proud that Isha Foundation and several NGOs have partnered with us. Their grassroots engagement and farmer outreach have made this campaign a people’s movement.”
Palm trees — Tamil Nadu’s official state tree — play a critical ecological role. They conserve groundwater, prevent soil and coastal erosion, and store carbon over a century-long lifespan. Every part of the palm — from leaf to trunk — supports rural economies, providing sustainable livelihood avenues.
The State aims to increase its green cover to 33% of total land area, with palm trees becoming a cornerstone of climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable livelihoods. Citizens are encouraged to collect fallen palm seeds, plant them near water bodies, and register their contributions through the Udhavi App — ensuring that Tamil Nadu’s green revolution continues to thrive at the grassroots level..
