CHENNAI, DEC 9
In a landmark move redefining corporate social responsibility and workplace inclusion in India, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has launched the Blind Bake Café at its Siruseri campus—the largest café operated by visually impaired chefs within any corporate setting in Singara Chennai after launching in its Mumbai campus.
A first-of-its-kind initiative, the café is run entirely by trained professionals with visual impairment, showcasing how thoughtful design, accessible technology and skill empowerment can enable independent, dignified and world-class culinary operations.
- Largest corporate café run by visually impaired chefs opens at Siruseri
- A New CSR benchmark in inclusivity, accessibility & dignified livelihoods
- Model scales successfully from Mumbai to Chennai, empowering more skilled blind professionals
- Designed with Braille Tech, Tactile Pathways & Adaptive Tools to Enable True Independence
The Chennai café builds on the overwhelming success of TCS’ maiden Blind Bake Café at its Olympus campus in Mumbai.
“Inclusion Becomes Real Only When It Is Lived Everyday” — TCS CHRO
The Blind Bake Café is powered by a partnership between TCS and the National Association for the Blind (NAB) India – Centre for Blind Women & Disability Studies. The team here comprises:
- Six visually impaired chefs
- Four sighted supervisors
- One café manager
They prepare fresh cakes, desserts, beverages, snacks and bakes in a full-format restaurant-style setup for employees on campus.
Sudeep Kunnumal, Chief Human Resources Officer, TCS, said: “Inclusion becomes real when barriers are removed and accessibility is embedded by design. Sensitization cannot remain limited to training modules. They must be experienced in everyday ways that enable us to understand and appreciate diverse abilities.”
He added: “The Blind Bake Café embodies this belief, offering our associates a space where inclusion and accessibility is lived and felt. The café has been designed with the needs of the staff in mind, including Braille-marked equipment, tactile flooring, and specialized training in alternate cooking methods. We believe this sets a new benchmark for inclusion initiatives.”
A Café Built For and By Visually Impaired Professionals
Just like in Mumbai, the Chennai outlet has been engineered for accessibility:
- Braille-marked ovens, appliances and tools
- Tactile flooring for movement without assistance
- Adaptive cooking techniques taught by NAB experts
- Assistive technologies for inventory, billing and workflow
This allows the visually impaired culinary team to work fully independently and professionally, setting a powerful example for inclusive employment in India’s corporate ecosystem.
Shalini Khanna Sodhi, Director, NAB India – Centre for Blind Women and Disability Studies, said: “Blind Bake Café represents a pathway to independence and empowerment. Our partnership with TCS is built on the belief that talent must be enabled, supported and celebrated. Expanding this initiative to Chennai creates meaningful livelihoods for many more individuals.”
A CSR Model India Can Scale Across Campuses & Corporates
The launch coincides with TCS’ observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, complementing new initiatives such as:
- Access.AI Hackathon Challenge to build AI-based accessibility tools
- Self-paced Indian Sign Language learning programme for all employees
These programs aim to deepen awareness, normalize inclusion and embed accessibility across TCS’ 600,000-strong workforce—making it one of India’s most progressive disability-inclusion champions.
All proceeds from the café go directly to the visually impaired staff and operations, while NAB reinvests funds to train more individuals in bakery and café management.
Launched as a small simulation pilot in 2021, the Blind Bake Café has now become a template for socially inclusive enterprise, with TCS planning to replicate it across more campuses nationwide.
Why This CSR Initiative Sets TCS Apart
- Not charity, but sustainable livelihood creation
- Not tokenism—full-scale operations managed independently
- Advanced accessibility tech integrated into kitchen workflow
- Livelihoods + skill development + reinvestment model
- A replicable CSR framework for India Inc.
For India’s corporate world, the Blind Bake Café stands as a trendsetting example of how inclusion can be meaningful, scalable and future-ready.
