According to the RMC, a fresh upper air cyclonic circulation is currently prevailing over the southeast Bay of Bengal, adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal and the equatorial Indian Ocean, extending up to 5.8 km above mean sea level. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the southwest Bay of Bengal, off the Sri Lanka coast, around January 10.
Weather blogger Hemachander R, who runs the popular Delta Weather Man social media handle, said the system could trigger widespread rainfall across several coastal and interior districts of Tamil Nadu on January 10, 11 and 12. He added that parts of the State, especially districts along the Western Ghats, have already received rain over the past two days, with the possibility of more showers on January 3 as well.
However, rainfall activity is expected to subside across Tamil Nadu until January 9, bringing relatively warmer daytime conditions and cooler nights. Farmers have been advised to utilise this brief dry window to carry out agricultural operations, Hemachander noted, as quoted in a Daily Thanthi report.
The RMC also forecast light to moderate rain at isolated places across Tamil Nadu and over Puducherry and Karaikal between January 3 and 9. Meanwhile, the earlier upper air cyclonic circulation over the southwest Bay of Bengal off the Sri Lanka coast and the associated trough extending into interior Tamil Nadu have weakened.
In addition, the weather department warned of a gradual fall in minimum temperatures by 2–4°C at a few places across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal between January 3 and 7, accompanied by early morning mist or haze.
Authorities have advised the public, farmers and fishermen to stay updated with official weather bulletins as the situation over the Bay of Bengal evolves in the coming days.
