NE ENVIRONMENT BUREAU
NEW DELHI, APR 25
India is entering a high-risk heat phase, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a comprehensive advisory as temperatures surge across large parts of the country.
- Heatwave spread widens: Northwest, central & peninsular India on alert; temps touching 44.5°C
- Health risk rises: Warm nights & humidity likely to worsen heat stress, especially for vulnerable groups
- Precaution critical: Avoid peak sun, hydrate, reduce outdoor exposure during high-heat hours
- 7-day outlook warning: Heatwave conditions expected to persist across multiple regions
Temperatures Spike, Heat Stress Builds
Maximum temperatures across northwest, central and peninsular India are currently ranging between 40°C and 44°C, with Sri Ganganagar in Rajasthan recording 44.5°C, among the highest this season. Several regions are witnessing temperatures 5°C above normal, signalling intensifying heat stress conditions.
Regions Under Watch
IMD has warned that heatwave conditions are very likely in parts of:
- Northwest India: Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh
- Central India: Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha
- Select southern pockets including Kerala & Mahe
At the same time, coastal and eastern states may experience hot and humid weather, while warm night conditions in northern plains could significantly increase discomfort and health risks.
Public Advisory: Stay Safe, Stay Cool
Citizens are strongly advised to:
- Avoid direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours
- Stay well-hydrated and consume fluids regularly
- Wear light, breathable clothing
- Avoid strenuous outdoor activities in extreme heat
Special caution is urged for children, the elderly and those with pre-existing illnesses, who are more vulnerable to heat exhaustion and heatstroke.
Outlook: Heat to Persist
IMD’s 7-day forecast indicates continued heatwave conditions, particularly across northwest and central India, with no major relief until April 27 in some regions. A gradual moderation may follow, but temperatures are expected to remain above normal in several pockets.
Preparedness & Public Access
The IMD has made detailed heatwave guidelines, do’s and don’ts, and sector-specific advisories publicly available on its official portal, urging citizens and local authorities to stay updated through verified sources and act early.
Bottom Line
As India braces for prolonged heatwave conditions, awareness, early precautions and responsible behaviour remain the strongest safeguards against rising heat-related health risks.
