Over the last 12 years, India’s aviation sector has witnessed unprecedented growth under the vision of making air travel accessible, affordable, safe and seamless. Through large-scale infrastructure creation, enhanced regional connectivity, digital initiatives and customer-focused services, the country has emerged as one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets.

  • From a modern integrated terminal and DigiYatra to green initiatives and multimodal connectivity, Chennai Airport showcases India’s aviation transformation
  • Passenger convenience, digital innovation and sustainable infrastructure emerge as the cornerstones of a world-class travel ecosystem
  • As Yatri Suvidha Diwas is celebrated, Chennai Airport reaffirms its commitment to making every journey safer, smarter, faster and more inclusive

The impact of this transformation is clearly visible at Chennai Airport, which has evolved into a modern global gateway serving millions of domestic and international passengers every year.

A defining milestone in this journey has been the commissioning of the New Integrated Terminal, significantly enhancing passenger handling capacity, operational efficiency and overall travel comfort while showcasing Tamil Nadu’s rich cultural heritage through its distinctive architectural design.

Today, Chennai Airport is equipped with advanced passenger processing systems, expanded check-in counters, upgraded security infrastructure, modern baggage handling facilities and enhanced accessibility features, enabling faster and smoother passenger movement while maintaining the highest standards of safety and security.

Its continued emphasis on operational excellence has also contributed to improved on-time performance, making travel more reliable and convenient.

Passenger convenience remains the airport’s central focus, with digital transformation playing a pivotal role in reshaping the airport experience.

The implementation of DigiYatra has enabled seamless, paperless and contactless travel, allowing passengers to move through checkpoints with greater speed and efficiency.

“Passenger convenience remains at the heart of everything we do.”

Across the country, DigiYatra is now operational at 38 airports and has facilitated more than 10 crore passenger journeys, setting new benchmarks in smart aviation services.

The airport has further enhanced traveller experience through several innovative initiatives. The Udan Yatri Café provides quality refreshments at affordable prices, making airport dining accessible to all sections of society, while the Flybrary initiative promotes reading and book sharing among travellers. Dedicated Kids’ Zones have also created a more comfortable and engaging environment for families travelling with children.

Accessibility and inclusivity continue to remain key priorities, with continuous improvements in facilities for senior citizens, persons with disabilities and passengers requiring special assistance.

“Our objective is to ensure that every traveller experiences a smooth and dignified journey through our airport.”

The growth story of Chennai Airport mirrors the broader success of Indian aviation. During the past decade, the number of operational airports across the country has increased from 74 to 165, while the UDAN regional connectivity scheme has operationalised 669 routes across 95 airports, bringing air travel to previously underserved regions and strengthening economic integration. One of Chennai Airport’s biggest advantages is its seamless multimodal connectivity through the Chennai Metro Rail, Tirusulam suburban railway station and direct access to the national highway network, creating an integrated transport ecosystem that enables efficient passenger movement and supports sustainable urban mobility.

India has simultaneously emerged as a global aviation leader in several areas. More than 15 per cent of Indian pilots are women, significantly higher than the global average, while the country’s Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) ecosystem continues to expand alongside enhanced flying training infrastructure and the emergence of GIFT City as a major aircraft leasing hub.

Sustainability has become another defining pillar of aviation growth.

Across India, 100 airports now operate on 100 per cent green energy, while major airport hubs have achieved carbon neutrality.

Chennai Airport continues to support this national vision through responsible environmental practices, including the promotion of electric vehicles, maintenance of a single-use plastic-free environment, extensive use of skylights for natural illumination and increased reliance on solar energy to reduce carbon emissions.

These initiatives have earned recognition from aviation and tourism organisations, reinforcing Chennai Airport’s reputation as one of India’s leading passenger-friendly aviation gateways.

As Chennai Airport celebrates Yatri Suvidha Diwas, officials emphasise that every infrastructure upgrade, digital innovation and service enhancement has been driven by a single objective—creating a seamless and memorable travel experience for every passenger.

“Every infrastructure project, every digital initiative and every service enhancement has a single purpose: improving the passenger journey.”

The achievements of the past 12 years underscore the remarkable rise of Indian aviation and the critical role played by airports such as Chennai in connecting people, accelerating economic growth and delivering world-class passenger experiences.

Concluding the occasion, the airport expressed gratitude to its passengers, airline partners, stakeholders, employees and the media for their continued trust and support in this journey of transformation.
