In a remarkable initiative aimed at taking India’s military history beyond museum walls and into the public domain, the Indian Army has installed two historic Centurion battle tanks at prominent locations along Chennai’s iconic Marina Beach, transforming the city’s famed coastline into a living classroom of patriotism, sacrifice and national pride.

Installed by the Indian Army Headquarters Dakshin Bharat Area on specially designed plinths developed by the Greater Chennai Corporation, the tanks are accompanied by informative display panels and aesthetic landscaping, enabling citizens to understand the glorious legacy of India’s armoured forces while paying tribute to generations of soldiers who defended the nation.

The initiative seeks to bring India’s rich war heritage closer to the people by fostering greater public awareness of the Armed Forces and their enduring legacy of courage, service and sacrifice.
Situated on one of the world’s longest urban beaches and among Chennai’s most visited cultural landmarks, the Centurion tanks are expected to attract thousands of students, families, tourists and citizens every day, making military history more accessible than ever before.
Far more than static exhibits, these battle-tested machines stand as timeless reminders of the price of freedom and the unwavering commitment of Indian soldiers who have safeguarded the nation’s sovereignty under the most challenging circumstances.
The Indian Army believes the installation will inspire younger generations to imbibe the values of discipline, dedication, courage, selfless service and patriotism, while fostering greater respect for the country’s armed forces.
Chennai occupies a unique and prestigious position in India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem.
The city is home to Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL), including the Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF) and Engine Factory Avadi (EFA), as well as the Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE) of DRDO, institutions that have played a crucial role in the design, production, overhaul and technological advancement of India’s armoured fighting vehicles.
The installation of the Centurion tanks at Marina Beach also serves as a tribute to Chennai’s longstanding contribution to strengthening India’s armoured capabilities and defence self-reliance.
As revered war trophies and enduring symbols of national service, the tanks deserve the highest standards of public respect and preservation.
