  • Army, Tamil Nadu Government and Greater Chennai Corporation join hands to strengthen civilian-military connect through a unique heritage conservation initiative
  • Visitors urged to treat the tanks with dignity and respect as enduring symbols of the bravery and selfless sacrifice of India’s soldiers

The initiative seeks to bring India’s rich war heritage closer to the people by fostering greater public awareness of the Armed Forces and their enduring legacy of courage, service and sacrifice.

Situated on one of the world’s longest urban beaches and among Chennai’s most visited cultural landmarks, the Centurion tanks are expected to attract thousands of students, families, tourists and citizens every day, making military history more accessible than ever before.

Far more than static exhibits, these battle-tested machines stand as timeless reminders of the price of freedom and the unwavering commitment of Indian soldiers who have safeguarded the nation’s sovereignty under the most challenging circumstances.

The Indian Army believes the installation will inspire younger generations to imbibe the values of discipline, dedication, courage, selfless service and patriotism, while fostering greater respect for the country’s armed forces.

Chennai occupies a unique and prestigious position in India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem.

The city is home to Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL), including the Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF) and Engine Factory Avadi (EFA), as well as the Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE) of DRDO, institutions that have played a crucial role in the design, production, overhaul and technological advancement of India’s armoured fighting vehicles.

The installation of the Centurion tanks at Marina Beach also serves as a tribute to Chennai’s longstanding contribution to strengthening India’s armoured capabilities and defence self-reliance.

As revered war trophies and enduring symbols of national service, the tanks deserve the highest standards of public respect and preservation.

“Visitors are encouraged to preserve the dignity of the displays and treat them as enduring reminders of the courage, sacrifice, and dedication of the soldiers who serve the nation.”

The initiative also reflects the growing synergy between the Armed Forces and civil administration, made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Indian Army, the Government of Tamil Nadu and the Greater Chennai Corporation.

By creating an open public space where history meets civic life, the project seeks to deepen public understanding of India’s military legacy while nurturing a culture of gratitude towards those who protect the nation.

“More than static exhibits, the Centurion tanks stand as living reminders of India’s military history and Chennai’s enduring contribution to national defence.”

As thousands of visitors walk past these towering steel sentinels every day, the Centurion tanks will silently narrate stories of battlefield courage and national resilience, ensuring that the sacrifices of India’s soldiers continue to inspire future generations long after the guns have fallen silent.
