What if the story of India’s military history could be experienced not merely through books and archives, but through the very machines that once guarded the Nation’s frontiers? At Chennai’s historic Victory War Memorial, history is now acquiring steel, wings and sails.
A decommissioned T-55 Main Battle Tank stands proudly on a specially curated platform, while replicas of the Indian Naval ships INS Vikrant and INS Anjadip have joined the evolving military heritage precinct.

Soon, a MiG-21 fighter aircraft will rise on an elevated pedestal. Representative maritime and air assets of the Indian Coast Guard are also planned for display.
Together, these exhibits are transforming the Memorial from a solemn place of remembrance into a vibrant centre of military heritage, public education, national pride and patriotic inspiration.
A memorial where India’s military story comes alive
Situated at the confluence of the iconic Marina Beach and the historic Fort St George precinct, the Victory War Memorial has long stood as a sacred tribute to the brave men and women who made the supreme sacrifice in the service of the Nation.
Originally constructed to commemorate the victory of the Allied Forces during the First World War (1914–1918), the Memorial was subsequently dedicated following the Second World War (1939–1945) in honour of personnel from the erstwhile Madras Presidency who laid down their lives.
Over the decades, its significance has expanded dramatically.
The engravings, once confined to battles and campaigns of the First World War, now commemorate major wars, battles and military operations of the Second World War and post-Independence India in which the Indian Armed Forces have participated.
The Memorial has thus evolved into a national tribute to generations of soldiers, sailors and air warriors who served India with courage and distinction.
From Asal Uttar’s Patton Nagar to the T-55’s frontier legacy
The new exhibits add a powerful dimension to this history.
Building upon the successful installation of legendary Centurion tanks at two prominent locations along Marina Beach, Indian Army Headquarters Dakshin Bharat Area has undertaken a comprehensive initiative to develop the Victory War Memorial into a living centre of remembrance and military heritage.
The Centurions recall one of the finest chapters in the history of India’s Armoured Corps.
During the 1965 Indo-Pak War, particularly at the historic Battle of Asal Uttar, Indian Centurion tanks played a decisive role in defeating superior enemy armour. The battlefield was later immortalised as ‘Patton Nagar’ after the large number of enemy Patton tanks destroyed there.
The newly displayed T-55 Main Battle Tank represents another illustrious chapter.
For decades, the T-55 formed the backbone of the Indian Army’s Armoured Corps, combining mobility, reliability and firepower in the defence of India’s frontiers.
These are not merely machines of war.
They are steel witnesses to the generations of Indian soldiers who stood ready to defend the Nation.
INS Vikrant & INS Anjadip: Steel, self-reliance and the sea
The naval exhibits extend the Memorial’s narrative from land battles to India’s maritime rise.
The replica of INS Vikrant represents India’s new indigenous aircraft carrier and symbolises the country’s growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
As India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant reflects the Nation’s ability to design and build highly complex warships of global standards.
The replica of INS Anjadip highlights India’s indigenous shipbuilding capabilities.
Built and commissioned at Kattupalli near Chennai, it also showcases Tamil Nadu’s significant contribution to India’s naval shipbuilding and defence manufacturing ecosystem.
Together, the two replicas tell a larger story — from importing defence platforms to designing and building them in India.
MiG-21, Coast Guard assets to join the heritage precinct
The proposed installation of a MiG-21 fighter aircraft will bring the Indian Air Force into the expanding military heritage narrative.
One of the most iconic combat aircraft to serve the Nation, the MiG-21 will symbolise the courage, professionalism and vigilance of generations of India’s air warriors.
Representative Indian Coast Guard maritime and air assets are also planned to be displayed, further strengthening the Memorial’s emerging Tri-Service ethos.
The result will be a unique public space where the Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard are represented through the platforms that have served India in war, peace, surveillance, rescue and national defence.
Chennai: The cradle of India’s armoured capability
The choice of Chennai carries special significance.
The city is at the heart of India’s Armoured Fighting Vehicle ecosystem.
It is home to Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited, including the Heavy Vehicles Factory, Engine Factory Avadi and Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment, along with associated quality assurance organisations.
Chennai also houses the historic Ordnance Depot, Avadi, raised in 1941 and designated as the Indian Army’s nodal transitory depot for tanks.
The Depot plays a crucial role in the receipt, provisioning, preservation and onward issue of newly manufactured and overhauled armoured fighting vehicles and associated equipment to Army formations across the country.
Together, these establishments span the entire life cycle of India’s armoured capability — research, design, production, quality assurance, logistics and sustenance.
The military heritage precinct therefore reflects not only the past of Indian defence but also Chennai’s continuing contribution to its future.
Light, Sound and Memory: History speaks to the next generation
A major attraction at the transformed Victory War Memorial is the newly introduced Light and Sound Show.
The immersive presentation narrates the courage, sacrifice and outstanding contribution of the Indian Armed Forces through the wars, battles and military operations that have shaped India’s history.
The programme is presently available in English and Hindi, with English and Tamil subtitles being introduced shortly to make the experience accessible to an even wider audience.
The Memorial’s chronological engravings further enable visitors to understand India’s military journey across generations.
For schoolchildren and young visitors, the experience offers something that no textbook can fully replicate: a direct encounter with the history of those who gave everything for the Nation.
A tribute that belongs to every citizen
Wreath-laying ceremonies on important national commemorative occasions are now conducted with a Tri-Services Guard of Honour, except on Service-specific occasions such as Army Day, Navy Day, Air Force Day and Coast Guard Day.
Schoolchildren, NCC cadets, veterans, serving personnel, government officials, police, civil administration representatives and members of the public participate in these solemn occasions.
The Victory War Memorial has also been opened to the public on designated days, enabling citizens, students, tourists and families to visit the precinct, experience the Light and Sound Show, view the military heritage exhibits and pay homage to the Nation’s Bravehearts.
The transformation has been made possible through the close cooperation and support of the Government of Tamil Nadu and the Greater Chennai Corporation, whose assistance in developing specially designed plinths, platforms and associated civil infrastructure has helped create a befitting setting for the iconic military exhibits.
Where the past salutes the future

Together with the Centurion tanks standing proudly along Marina Beach, the transformed Victory War Memorial will preserve India’s military heritage, strengthen public outreach, foster national pride, promote a Tri-Service ethos and deepen the bond between the Armed Forces and society.
In Chennai, the weapons of yesterday are becoming the lessons of tomorrow — and every visitor who walks through this living memorial will be reminded of a timeless truth: India’s freedom was defended by courage, preserved by sacrifice and must forever be honoured with gratitude.
