AHMEDABAD, JULY 29

India’s telecom race is increasingly becoming a numbers game—and in June, Reliance Jio had the strongest scorecard. The operator added more active wireless subscribers than any other telecom player during the month, while simultaneously extending its lead across mobile, wireline and 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), according to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

Jio’s active, or Visitor Location Register (VLR), subscriber base expanded by 3.33 million to 498.90 million in June. That was higher than Bharti Airtel’s 2.92 million addition, while Vodafone Idea and BSNL/MTNL recorded net declines in active subscribers.

With 41.5% of India’s 1,201.06 million active wireless subscribers, Jio retained the country’s largest active subscriber base.

Mobile leadership stays firmly with Jio

Jio also remained India’s largest wireless/mobile operator at the end of June, with 503.58 million subscribers, translating into a 39.3% market share. The company added 2.15 million wireless subscribers during the month.

The operator’s lead extends beyond mobile connectivity. In the wireline segment, Jio continued to hold the top position with 15.63 million subscribers, representing 32.7% of India’s fixed-line market, after adding 144,057 connections in June.

The numbers highlight Jio’s increasingly broad connectivity footprint as telecom competition shifts from conventional mobile subscriber acquisition towards a combination of mobile, home broadband and next-generation wireless services.

5G FWA becomes another Jio stronghold

Jio’s dominance is particularly pronounced in 5G Fixed Wireless Access, where it had 9.11 million subscribers at the end of June—accounting for 70.5% of India’s total 5G FWA subscriber base of 12.94 million.

The company also recorded the highest monthly addition in 5G FWA, adding 145,790 subscribers during June.

Jio additionally remained the only operator reporting subscribers under 5G Unlicensed Band Radio (UBR) fixed-wireless services, with its UBR base reaching 4.93 million after adding 201,302 subscribers during the month.

The latest figures come against a broader expansion in India’s telecom universe. The country’s total telephone subscriber base reached 1,348.08 million at the end of June 2026, registering a net addition of 4.98 million subscribers during the month.

For Jio, the June numbers point to a multi-layered connectivity strategy: maintaining scale in mobile, deepening its wireline footprint and converting 5G technology into a rapidly expanding home-connectivity business.
