For many senior citizens, Independence Day is not merely a date on the calendar—it is a living memory of an India they watched transform, decade after decade. Giving that emotion a special place this Independence Day, ‘Peer Parai’ and ‘Parivartan’ will host a musical evening of patriotic songs with residents of old-age homes in Ahmedabad, seeking to make the country’s 80th Independence Day a celebration of dignity, remembrance and belonging.
The programme will be held on Saturday at the ISRO Community Centre, Vikramnagar, Ambli-Bopal Road, Ahmedabad, bringing elderly residents together with distinguished guests for an evening dedicated to the nation.
A Celebration Where Memories Meet the Tricolour
The patriotic gathering will be presided over by noted social worker and industrialist Maganbhai H. Patel. Vinod Agrawal, former Chairman of the CII Gujarat Council, will attend as the chief guest, while social worker and industrialist Bipin Soni will be the special guest.
Rajkumar Hariram, Chairman of Agrawal Disneyland School, social worker and cow welfare activist, will also attend as a distinguished guest.
For the elderly residents, the evening is expected to be much more than a cultural programme. It is an opportunity to sing songs associated with the nation, revisit memories of a changing India and celebrate Independence Day in the company of people who care.
12 years of celebrating Independence with the elderly
The event marks the 12th consecutive Independence Day programme organised by the Peer Parai Foundation with residents of old-age homes.
The initiative seeks to ensure that senior citizens—many of whom may otherwise spend national occasions away from their families—are placed at the heart of the celebrations.
The evening of patriotic music is expected to create an atmosphere where memories, music and national pride converge, giving the elderly a platform to participate rather than merely watch.
A Month of Preparation for a Night of Emotion
The teams of Peer Parai and Parivartan, under the leadership of Sharad Agrawal, have been preparing for the programme for the past month.
Among those actively contributing to the preparations are Peer Parai secretary Pramod Gupta (Advocate), vice-president Ramesh Jain, along with Rakesh Jain, Prem Bansal, Nilesh Agrawal, Vineet Agrawal, Sushil Bansal, Sunil Bhansali, Kaushikbhai Shah, Devendra Patel, Ashok Rathod and Sumit Agrawal, among other members.
For the senior citizens taking part, the real celebration may lie in something simple: being remembered, being invited and being able to raise their voices once again for the country they have spent a lifetime calling home.
