What happens when an institute at the forefront of India’s technological education joins hands with a university positioned at the gateway of the Suez Canal? A new India-Egypt academic corridor could be taking shape as the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) and Port Said University (PSU), Egypt, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Monday to expand collaboration in education, research and global academic exchange.

The partnership seeks to connect the academic strengths of the two institutions through student and faculty exchanges, internships, collaborative research and international academic activities, while creating opportunities across science, engineering and humanities.

For IITGN, the partnership also comes at an interesting juncture with its new Maritime Engineering programme, potentially opening a new avenue for academic engagement with a university located at the entrance of one of the world’s most strategically important maritime corridors.

A Suez Canal connection meets India’s innovation ecosystem

Welcoming the Port Said University delegation, Prof Rajat Moona, Director, IITGN, underlined the potential of the partnership to create meaningful opportunities for students and faculty.

“It is a pleasure to welcome our colleagues from Port Said University, especially the President and the delegation, to IIT Gandhinagar. We see this partnership as an opportunity to connect our academic and research strengths and create meaningful opportunities for students and faculty on both sides. We look forward to building this relationship further in the years ahead.”

Prof Sherif Youssef Saleh, President, Port Said University, described the agreement as an important platform for deepening academic and scientific cooperation.

“We are very happy to establish this partnership with IIT Gandhinagar. There is great potential for academic and scientific cooperation. We look forward to developing this relationship further and strengthening the academic ties between Port Said University and IIT Gandhinagar.”

The geographical complementarity is striking: IITGN brings India’s technology, research and innovation ecosystem, while Port Said University is located at the entrance of the Suez Canal and serves as an academic and research hub for Egypt, the Middle East and Africa.

Students at the heart of the new corridor

The MoU envisages a broad menu of student-centric opportunities, including student exchanges, study-abroad and immersion programmes, social immersion programmes and research internships.

The institutions can also explore joint and double-degree programmes at the Master’s and PhD levels, collaborative development of courses and academic programmes, online courses and certificate and degree programmes.

Prof Amit Prashant, Dean, External Relations, IITGN, explained the possibilities for flexible-duration academic exchanges, research internships and cultural immersion programmes, including connecting students with research laboratories and facilitating hosting arrangements during exchange programmes.

Such initiatives could give students exposure not only to another academic system but also to a different cultural and research environment.

Research gets a transcontinental launchpad

The agreement goes beyond mobility programmes, with both institutions set to explore joint research and academic collaboration involving departments, institutes and research centres.

During the interaction, Prof Madhav Pathak, Faculty-in-Charge, International Relations, IITGN, presented the institute’s academic and research ecosystem and its growing network of international engagements.

Prof Mukesh Dhanka, Coordinator for Africa, International Relations, IITGN, coordinated the MoU-signing ceremony and discussed research possibilities in biological sciences and engineering.

The interaction also featured insights from Dr Ayat Saad Ahmed Ismail, Head, Bureau of Cultural and Educational Relations, Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt, New Delhi, followed by a presentation and institutional video by Port Said University and an open discussion on potential areas of collaboration.

Beyond classrooms: joint degrees, courses and global immersion

The proposed collaboration offers considerable scope for the two institutions to move beyond conventional exchange programmes.

The MoU provides for exchange of faculty members for teaching, research and internships; joint workshops and conferences; joint development of courses; online academic programmes; and joint and double-degree programmes at Master’s and PhD levels.

The institutions will also exchange information on their research and educational programmes and explore additional areas of mutual interest.

The IITGN team at the interaction included Prof S P Mehrotra, Dean, Faculty Affairs; Prof Vimal Mishra, Dean, Research and Development; Somnath Mitra; and heads of various departments, besides faculty members who participated in discussions on potential academic and research collaboration.

An India-Egypt knowledge bridge with global ambitions

The partnership could give a fresh institutional dimension to India-Egypt educational relations, particularly by connecting technological education, multidisciplinary research and international student mobility.

Port Said University’s location near the Suez Canal gives the collaboration an added geographical and strategic context, while IITGN’s focus on science and technology education, research, development, industrial applications and societal impact brings complementary strengths to the table.

The immediate promise lies in exchanges, internships and research. The larger opportunity is to build a sustained knowledge bridge between India and Egypt, allowing students and researchers to learn across borders, develop joint solutions and create new academic pathways.

As Prof Moona put it, the objective is to “connect our academic and research strengths”—a modest phrase that could eventually translate into a much wider corridor of people, ideas, research and innovation between Gandhinagar and Port Said.
