AHMEDABAD, AUG 19

When the fragrance of devotion rises with the rhythm of kirtan, when the joyous call of “Hare Krishna” mingles with the anticipation of the divine midnight, and when the temple doors open not merely to devotees but to society at large, Janmashtami becomes more than a festival—it becomes a celebration of consciousness, compassion and collective joy.

That is the spirit with which the Hare Krishna Temple, Bhadaj, is taking the message of Lord Krishna beyond the temple precincts through its statewide initiative “Swagatam Krishna 2026”, seeking to make the divine celebration resonate across Gujarat—from Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar to Rajkot, Surat, Vadodara and several towns and villages.

The initiative will unfold through a series of spiritual-cultural programmes during Shravan, culminating in the grand Sri Krishna Janmashtami Mahotsav on September 4 at the Hare Krishna Temple, Bhadaj, and ISKCON Gandhinagar, Sector-1.

Radha Govinda Jhulana Yatra will be held from August 23 to 28, followed by Sri Krishna Janmashtami on September 4, giving the celebrations a distinctly devotional arc from the swinging of the divine couple to the joyous commemoration of Lord Krishna’s appearance.

From Bhadaj to the villages: Krishna’s message takes a statewide journey

Announcing the programme, Jaganmohan Krishna Das, President, ISKCON Hare Krishna Movement, said Swagatam Krishna 2026 was conceived to take the essence of Janmashtami outside the temple and into different sections of society.

The initiative will encompass programmes at Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Rajkot, Surat, Vadodara, Sanand, Viramgam, Kadi and Kalol, besides programmes in nearly 10 villages of Viramgam taluka during the month of Shravan.

Elaborating on the schedule, Jaganmohan Krishna Das said programmes would begin on August 22 at Chandkheda, Gota and Gandhinagar, followed by a programme in Rajkot on August 23. Further programmes are scheduled at Chandlodia, Nikol and Adani Shantigram on August 29, and at Sanand, Kalol and Ved Mandir-Maninagar on August 30.

The statewide spiritual journey will continue through September, with programmes in Surat and Vadodara on September 4, before concluding at Kadi Town Hall on September 13.

The idea, he said, was not simply to organise another festival but to make the message of Sri Krishna accessible to the elderly, youth and every section of society.

‘Take Krishna outside the temple’: a festival with a larger purpose

“The aim of ‘Swagatam Krishna 2026’ is to take the message and spirit of Sri Krishna Janmashtami outside the temple to various sections of society such as the elderly men and women as well as the promising future of India, the youth,” Jaganmohan Krishna Das said.

The initiative draws inspiration from Srila Prabhupada, the founder-acharya of ISKCON, who dedicated his life to spreading the teachings of Lord Krishna, the Bhagavad Gita and the Hare Krishna Mahamantra across the world.

Thus, the celebrations are being positioned as a bridge between spirituality and society—bringing devotional music, cultural programmes and Krishna consciousness closer to communities that may not always be able to visit major temples.

At every venue, dignitaries and prominent members of society will join the celebrations and receive the blessings of Lord Krishna, organisers said.

The grand finale will come on September 4, when Janmashtami will be celebrated throughout the day at ISKCON Hare Krishna Temple, Bhadaj, and ISKCON Gandhinagar, Sector-1.

Jhulan Mahotsav to set the devotional mood

Before the crescendo of Janmashtami, the Jhulan Mahotsav from August 23 to 28 will provide devotees with an opportunity to immerse themselves in the traditional devotional celebration of the divine swing.

The Bhadaj temple will subsequently transform into a vast spiritual-cultural canvas on September 4, with darshan, kirtan, devotional music, cultural programmes and special Janmashtami rituals planned for devotees and the general public.

The celebration is expected to continue from 8 am to 12.30 am, bringing together the serenity of worship and the exuberance traditionally associated with Krishna Janmashtami.

‘Devotees are self-disciplined’: crowd management gets special focus

With a large number of devotees expected to converge on the temples, the organisers have made crowd management and devotee safety an important part of the preparations.

Asked what measures would be put in place to control the heavy rush and prevent a stampede-like situation, Jaganmohan Krishna Das said the organisers were confident of managing the gathering through trained volunteers and adequate facilities.

“All Krishna devotees are self-disciplined. However, we will deploy our well-trained volunteers at all vantage points of the temples under our control, who will tackle all issues with ease.”

He added that the arrangements had been designed to ensure that devotees could complete their pilgrimage comfortably.

“With all amenities catering to the needs of devotees, they can have darshan, prasad and also enjoy other cultural activities. Special arrangements have also been made to serve the senior citizens.”

The emphasis on trained volunteers, multiple vantage points and facilities for senior citizens assumes particular significance as Janmashtami celebrations traditionally draw substantial crowds.

For Ahmedabad, the 2026 ISKCON Janmashtami falls on Friday, September 4. Panchang calculations place the local Nishita worship window around midnight, adding to the devotional anticipation surrounding the culmination of the celebrations.

When devotion turns into celebration, Gujarat gets ready to say ‘Swagatam Krishna’

And so, across Gujarat, the countdown has begun.

From the gentle swing of Jhulan Mahotsav to the thunderous chorus of Hare Krishna, from the solemnity of darshan to the infectious gaiety of devotional celebrations, Swagatam Krishna 2026 seeks to turn Janmashtami into a statewide experience of faith and fellowship.

At Bhadaj, the celebration will reach its spiritual crescendo with devotees participating in darshan, kirtan, devotional music, cultural programmes and the special rituals marking the divine manifestation of Lord Krishna.

The message is simple but expansive: Krishna need not remain within the walls of a temple; His teachings, compassion and wisdom must travel into homes, communities, villages and the hearts of the young and old alike.

And when Gujarat responds with a resounding “Hare Krishna!”, piety and gaiety will, for a while, cease to be rivals—they will become two expressions of the same celebration.
