The steroid API powerhouse hits the IPO highway: Symbiotec bets ₹1,757 cr on a global pharma moat

  • But the bigger investment story lies beyond the numbers: a backward-integrated ‘microbe-to-pharmacy’ platform, global regulatory approvals and a portfolio spanning more than 60 steroidal APIs

AHMEDABAD, AUG 20

It is not merely another pharma IPO knocking on Dalal Street’s door — it is a bet on the chemistry hidden behind some of the world’s most widely used medicines. Symbiotec Pharmalab, an Indore-based research-driven pharmaceutical and biotechnology company with a claimed global leadership position in corticosteroid and steroidal-hormone active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), is coming to the primary market with a ₹1,757-crore initial public offering, putting its specialised steroid API franchise under the public-market spotlight.

Backed by Rosewood Investments and Motilal Oswal, Symbiotec has fixed the IPO price band at ₹938 to ₹988 per equity share. The issue will open for subscription on Monday, August 24 and close on Thursday, August 27, with the anchor book scheduled to open on Friday, August 21. Investors can bid for a minimum of 15 shares, and thereafter in multiples of 15.

At the upper end of the band, the issue is expected to give Symbiotec a post-issue market capitalisation of about ₹6,348.5 crore. The offer comprises a fresh issue of ₹150 crore and an offer for sale (OFS) of up to ₹1,607 crore by existing shareholders.

The structure makes the IPO particularly noteworthy: only a relatively small portion of the headline issue size will create fresh capital for the company, while the overwhelming bulk of the offering represents an exit opportunity for existing investors.

₹1,757 crore issue: fresh capital is the smaller story

Of the ₹150 crore fresh issue, ₹112.5 crore will be deployed towards partial repayment of debt, with the balance earmarked for general corporate purposes. Money raised through the OFS will accrue entirely to the selling shareholders.

Satwani Holdings, Rosewood Investments and India Business Excellence Fund-III will participate in the OFS. Rosewood Investments, advised by InvAscent, is the largest investor with a 37.19% stake, while India Business Excellence Fund-III, managed by Motilal Oswal, holds 24.47%. Promoters currently own 26.91% of Symbiotec.

A steroid API franchise with a global punch

What sets Symbiotec apart from a conventional pharma manufacturer is the depth of its niche.

The company claims a 36.2% global volume market share in corticosteroid APIs and 44.2% in steroidal-hormone APIs in FY25, according to the Frost & Sullivan report cited in its offer documents. It also claims to be the only Indian and global company with a presence across the top 10 corticosteroid and steroidal-hormone APIs.

Its product portfolio spans more than 60 corticosteroid and steroidal-hormone APIs, including products such as hydrocortisones, methylprednisolones, betamethasones, progesterones, testosterones and estrogens, which find applications across respiratory care, pain management, dermatology, oncology and gynaecology.

The company operates two API manufacturing facilities, with maximum chemical synthesis capacity of 584.67 metric tonnes and fermentation capacity of 300 kilolitres. Its capabilities span organic chemistry, biotechnology and complex injectables, besides contract development and manufacturing operations.

Its manufacturing platform has evolved into what the company describes as a vertically integrated “microbe-to-pharmacy” model. It has also secured regulatory approvals and certifications from agencies and authorities, including the US FDA, EU-GMP and South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, strengthening its international manufacturing credentials.

The numbers: growth, but with a valuation question

Symbiotec reported ₹751.6 crore revenue and ₹96.8 crore profit in FY25, compared with ₹716.2 crore and ₹100 crore, respectively, in FY24. Thus, revenue grew about 5%, while profit declined 3.3%.

The latest available financial information cited in IPO-related sources indicates that the company’s annualised FY26 revenue was about ₹812.68 crore, with PAT of approximately ₹119.68 crore, suggesting improvement in profitability over FY25.

The company’s June 2025 quarter recorded ₹203.1 crore revenue and ₹29.9 crore profit. Its EBITDA for the corresponding period was about ₹60.6 crore, according to restated financial information.

The IPO therefore offers investors a curious combination: a highly specialised global API franchise, strong claimed market shares and improving profitability, but an issue structure dominated by OFS rather than fresh capital generation.

That distinction is likely to remain central to the market’s assessment of the offering.

Big names, bigger pharma opportunity

Symbiotec will enter the listed pharma/API arena alongside Concord Biotech, Divi’s Laboratories, Cohance Lifesciences and Laurus Labs, which it identifies as key listed Indian peers.

Its specialised portfolio and backward integration could provide a degree of differentiation in a competitive API market. The DRHP also points to a broader global API opportunity: the worldwide API market was estimated at US$399.9 billion by 2029, while the corticosteroid API market was valued at about US$414.5 million in 2024, according to the Frost & Sullivan research cited in the offer document.

The IPO will be managed by JM Financial, Avendus Capital, Motilal Oswal Investment Advisors and Nomura Financial Advisory and Securities (India), while MUFG Intime India will act as registrar to the issue.
