Not just more tracks, but more possibilities: The Centre’s approval of three multi-tracking projects covering 383 km across Tamil Nadu is set to add capacity to key passenger and freight corridors, promising smoother journeys, stronger industrial logistics and a faster rail link to the State’s tourism and pilgrimage destinations —Representational Image.

Tamil Nadu is set to get a major railway capacity shot in the arm, with three multi-tracking projects spanning 383 km approved as part of a ₹10,021-crore package covering four southern States. The projects are not merely about laying additional rails—they are designed to unlock train capacity, decongest critical corridors, strengthen industrial logistics, improve passenger reliability and open wider access to some of Tamil Nadu’s key tourism and pilgrimage destinations.

The CCEA has approved ₹10,021 crore for key railway projects that will enhance capacity and strengthen connectivity across the region.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved five railway multi-tracking projects covering 17 districts across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana, adding about 540 km to the existing Indian Railways network. The projects are targeted for completion by 2029-30.

  • Three TN projects account for 383 km of the 540-km Southern rail capacity push approved at ₹10,021 crore
  • Arakkonam–Renigunta third and fourth lines to strengthen one of Tamil Nadu’s busiest passenger-freight gateways
  • Hosur–Omalur doubling to energise Bengaluru–Salem industrial and economic corridor
  • Salem–Karur–Dindigul doubling to turbocharge textiles, steel, agriculture, food processing and freight movement
  • More trains, smoother logistics and stronger tourism connectivity expected across Tamil Nadu

For Tamil Nadu, the headline numbers are particularly significant: 383 km of the approved 540 km is in three projects covering the Arakkonam–Renigunta, Hosur–Omalur and Salem–Karur–Dindigul corridors.

The expansion is expected to ease congestion, improve operational efficiency and reliability, and provide additional paths for both passenger and freight trains.

383 km that could change Tamil Nadu’s rail map

The three Tamil Nadu-linked projects are:

  • Arakkonam–Renigunta third and fourth lines — 77 km
  • Hosur–Omalur doubling — 147 km
  • Salem–Karur–Dindigul doubling — 159 km

Together, these works create a 383-km capacity-enhancement spine across strategically important parts of the State.

The Arakkonam–Renigunta section is particularly crucial because it handles substantial passenger and freight movement towards Andhra Pradesh and beyond. The proposed third and fourth lines are expected to ease congestion, improve punctuality and create greater flexibility for train operations.

The Hosur–Omalur doubling, meanwhile, strengthens connectivity between the Bengaluru industrial region and Salem, while the Salem–Karur–Dindigul doubling reinforces a major industrial and agricultural belt of Tamil Nadu.

From Salem’s steel to Karur’s textiles: freight gets a new runway

The biggest economic dividend for Tamil Nadu could come from the freight side.

The Salem–Karur–Dindigul corridor serves industrial clusters spanning steel, textiles, agriculture, food processing and other manufacturing activities. Its capacity augmentation is expected to facilitate smoother passenger and freight movement while improving logistics efficiency and reducing transportation costs.

For the State’s businesses, additional rail capacity can mean fewer bottlenecks, more predictable freight movement and greater scope for shifting cargo from road to rail.

The projects across the four States are expected to facilitate additional freight traffic of about 47 million tonnes per annum, covering commodities such as coal, cement, iron and steel, containers, automobiles, foodgrains, petroleum products and fertilisers.

That makes the Tamil Nadu projects particularly relevant to the State’s industrial and logistics ambitions.

Hosur–Omalur: strengthening an industrial artery

The 147-km Hosur–Omalur doubling project could provide an important capacity boost to a corridor connecting one of Tamil Nadu’s major industrial zones with the Salem region.

Hosur’s proximity to Bengaluru and its established industrial ecosystem make dependable rail connectivity strategically important for movement of people as well as goods.

Additional line capacity can create greater operational flexibility, allowing Railways to accommodate more passenger services while also providing additional freight paths.

For Tamil Nadu, that translates into a potentially stronger Bengaluru–Hosur–Salem economic axis, with improved rail connectivity supporting industries, workers, traders and logistics operators.

From temples to waterfalls: tourism gets a faster track

The benefits are not confined to industry.

The capacity enhancement will improve rail access to several prominent tourist and pilgrimage destinations, including Tiruttani, Hogenakkal Falls, Hosur Fort, Mettur Dam, Kodaikanal Hills, Sathyamangalam Wildlife Sanctuary, Namakkal Anjaneyar Temple, Namakkal Fort and Kalyana Pasupatheswar Temple, besides destinations in neighbouring States such as Tirupati and Tiruchanur.

For Tamil Nadu, stronger rail capacity could therefore support pilgrimage circuits, weekend tourism, heritage travel and nature tourism, while making travel more convenient for visitors and local communities.

The broader package is expected to improve connectivity to about 2,121 villages with a combined population of around 52 lakh.

A greener, faster logistics proposition

The projects have been planned under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, with an emphasis on integrated planning, multi-modal connectivity and logistics efficiency.

Higher rail capacity is also expected to encourage greater movement of passengers and freight by rail, an energy-efficient mode of transport.

According to the Centre, the capacity augmentation could help generate additional freight traffic of around 47 million tonnes annually, reduce oil consumption by approximately 8 crore litres and cut carbon dioxide emissions by about 42 crore kg—equivalent to the carbon absorption associated with planting around 2 crore trees.

The Government has said the projects are aligned with the vision of a New India that makes people “Atmanirbhar” through comprehensive regional development and expanded employment and self-employment opportunities.

For Tamil Nadu, however, the real measure of success will ultimately be felt on the ground: more train paths, fewer bottlenecks, faster freight movement, better reliability and easier access to jobs, markets and destinations.

With 383 km of the new capacity concentrated across three strategically important Tamil Nadu corridors, the State’s railway story is clearly moving from simply adding trains to building the capacity to run many more of them.
