HAZIRA/SURAT, SEPT 17
From high-strength steel plates engineered for demanding structural applications to advanced coatings designed to resist corrosion, ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has secured a dual certification milestone that could widen the domestic supply base for specialised steel. With two new Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) licences, the company is positioning its products for high-value applications across infrastructure, defence and industrial manufacturing—while reinforcing India’s drive to reduce reliance on imported materials.

AM/NS India has become India’s first steel manufacturer to receive the All India First BIS Licence under IS 2062 (Part 2):2026, covering hot-rolled quenched and tempered (Q&T) steel plates, sheets, strips and wide flats. The company has also secured a BIS licence under IS 19210:2025 for pre-painted zinc-aluminium-magnesium (Zn-Al-Mg) alloy-coated steel strip and sheet.
- FIRST-MOVER MILESTONE: AM/NS India becomes the first Indian steelmaker licensed under IS 2062 (Part 2):2026 for quenched and tempered steel plates.
- A SECOND CERTIFICATION: The company secures a BIS licence for pre-painted zinc-aluminium-magnesium coated steel under IS 19210:2025.
- IMPORT SUBSTITUTION PUSH: New domestic supply avenues for specialised steel grades could support procurement across infrastructure, defence and industrial applications.
- STRENGTH MEETS DURABILITY: High-strength Q&T plates and corrosion-resistant coated products expand the company’s specialised steel portfolio.
- FROM HAZIRA TO PUNE: Certified products draw on manufacturing capabilities at the company’s Hazira and Pune facilities.
- 25 BIS LICENCES: The company says its portfolio includes three All India First licences, including the latest Q&T steel certification.
The twin certifications mark a significant expansion of the company’s certified specialised steel portfolio and support its stated commitment to innovation, quality and the Government of India’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.
A domestic source for specialised steel
The new licences have operational and commercial implications for the company’s access to projects requiring certified steel products.
BIS certification is a prerequisite for supplying products covered by applicable mandatory certification requirements. The licences enable AM/NS India to supply the newly certified grades to projects where compliance with the relevant standards is required.
The Q&T steel certification is particularly significant for domestic sourcing, as it establishes AM/NS India as a licensed Indian manufacturer under the newly introduced standard. This creates a local supply option for market segments that have relied on imported materials.
The licences also expand the company’s ability to commercially distribute specialised products manufactured at its Hazira and Pune facilities, addressing applications ranging from high-load structural requirements to corrosion-resistant construction.
Q&T steel: Stronger structures, demanding applications
The newly introduced IS 2062 (Part 2):2026 is the first BIS standard specifically developed for quenched and tempered steel plates.
Produced through a specialised heat-treatment process, Q&T steel offers high strength and durability. Its properties can enable lighter yet stronger structures, depending on design requirements, while supporting applications involving demanding load and performance conditions.
Potential applications include:
- Bridges and heavy engineering equipment
- Mining machinery and industrial structures
- Offshore and marine applications
- Infrastructure requiring high-strength steel components
The material is relevant to sectors where structural performance, durability and safety are central considerations.
Advanced coatings target corrosion resistance
The second certification, IS 19210:2025, establishes a quality framework for pre-painted zinc-aluminium-magnesium alloy-coated steel strip and sheet.
AM/NS India’s offering in this category is based on Optigal®, ArcelorMittal’s zinc-aluminium-magnesium coated steel technology.
Compared with conventional colour-coated steel products, the company says the advanced coating delivers superior corrosion resistance, enhanced cut-edge protection, longer service life and reduced maintenance requirements.
These properties make the products suitable for applications such as roofing and cladding, pre-engineered buildings, infrastructure, warehousing, railways and industrial construction.
For project owners and manufacturers, the potential benefits include improved durability and lower maintenance needs over the product’s service life, subject to application conditions and appropriate design.
Steel for strategic national assets
AM/NS India said its steel has contributed to critical national assets, including the Chenab Rail Bridge and strategic naval platforms such as INS Surat, INS Visakhapatnam and the recently commissioned INS Malvan.
The latest certifications add to the company’s efforts to develop specialised steel products for India’s evolving infrastructure and manufacturing requirements.
The company’s Hazira and Pune facilities form part of its manufacturing base for the newly certified products, supporting its efforts to align domestic production with specialised industrial demand.
25 BIS licences, three All India First licences
AM/NS India currently holds 25 BIS licences, including three All India First licences under IS 3039, IS 18809:2024 and IS 2062 (Part 2):2026, according to the company.
The latest milestone strengthens its portfolio of certified steel products and reflects its stated focus on introducing advanced steel technologies to the Indian market.
As India continues to expand infrastructure, manufacturing and strategic-sector capabilities, the availability of specialised steel from domestic sources could support procurement diversification and import substitution.
The larger significance of the dual certification lies in the combination of advanced material performance and domestic manufacturing capability: bringing more specialised steel options within reach of projects that require certified products, while supporting the country’s broader industrial development ambitions.
