AHMEDABAD, OCT 17

With next-day delivery becoming critical for businesses, financial institutions and citizens handling time-sensitive documents, India Post has extended its premium ‘24 Speed Post Document Service’ to Ahmedabad, offering guaranteed delivery within 24 hours to designated PIN codes in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane. The initiative, inaugurated at Ahmedabad General Post Office (GPO) on October 15, the concluding day of National Postal Week, marks another step in the Department of Posts’ efforts to strengthen its time-bound express delivery network.

Krishna Kumar Yadav, Postmaster General, North Gujarat Region, inaugurated the service at Ahmedabad GPO. Bhavika Mangukiya became the first customer to book an article under the new service from Ahmedabad to Thane, Maharashtra. Yadav handed over the booking receipt to her.

Available to both retail and bulk customers, the service carries a tariff different from that of regular Speed Post. Its principal attraction is the commitment to next-day delivery, backed by a money-back assurance in the event of delay or loss, subject to the applicable terms and conditions.

Three booking centres to serve Ahmedabad initially

The service is initially available at Ahmedabad GPO, Navrangpura Business Development (BD) Cell and the Business Post Centre at Shahibaug. The booking facility is expected to be extended to Navrangpura Head Post Office and the post offices at Ellisbridge, Manekbaug and Paldi to improve accessibility.

According to Yadav, eligible documents booked under the service will be delivered within 24 hours to designated destination PIN codes identified by the Department of Posts in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane. Deliveries will also be undertaken on Sundays and public holidays, an important feature for customers who cannot afford delays in transmitting essential documents.

The service is designed to strengthen India Post’s position in the premium express delivery segment by combining defined delivery timelines with secure handling and tracking facilities.

Four decades of Speed Post evolution

India Post introduced Speed Post on August 1, 1986, to provide efficient, secure and time-bound delivery of letters and parcels. Over four decades, the service has evolved into a technology-enabled express delivery network.

On March 17, 2026, the Department of Posts launched three premium services—‘24 Speed Post’, ‘24 Speed Post Parcel’ and ‘48 Speed Post’—in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. The services were launched in New Delhi by Union Minister of Communications and Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, in the presence of Minister of State for Communications Chandrasekhar Pemmasani, Secretary (Posts) Vandita Kaul and Director General (Posts) Jitendra Gupta.

The services were designed to provide assured delivery within 24 to 48 hours in the initial six-city network, with dedicated processing windows and priority air transmission supporting the stipulated timelines. The introduction of the document service in Ahmedabad expands the reach of India Post’s premium, time-sensitive delivery offerings.

Technology and security at the core

Yadav said the premium Speed Post services incorporate several customer-focused features, including one-time password (OTP)-based secure delivery, end-to-end tracking with SMS alerts, the Book Now Pay Later (BNPL) facility for business customers, free pickup for bulk bookings, application programming interface (API) integration and centralised billing.

These facilities are intended to improve convenience for institutional as well as individual customers. The service is particularly relevant to businesses, banks, financial institutions, government offices and other organisations that routinely transmit documents requiring secure handling and predictable delivery timelines.

Manjulaben Patel, Senior Postmaster, Ahmedabad GPO, said the ‘24 Speed Post Document Service’ would accept eligible documents weighing up to 500 grams. These include PAN cards, Aadhaar cards, voter identity cards, passports, driving licences and banking-related documents.

Special mailbags, packaging materials, priority stickers, barcode labels and other prescribed materials have been arranged for smooth operations. Customers must provide complete and accurate addresses for both sender and recipient, along with their mobile numbers, in accordance with the prescribed guidelines.

Postal officials attend inauguration

The inauguration was attended by Shishir Kumar, Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Ahmedabad City Division; Piyush Rajak, Senior Superintendent, Railway Mail Service; Alpesh Shah and Varis Vahora, Assistant Directors; Jagdish Jid and Ronak Shah, Assistant Superintendents; and Bhavin Prajapati and Vipul Chadotra, Postal Inspectors, among other officials.

The expansion comes as India Post seeks to combine its extensive postal network with faster delivery commitments, digital tracking and customer-oriented services to meet the changing requirements of individuals and institutions.
