NE LAW & BUSINESS BUREAU
AHMEDABAD, OCTOBER 18
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has seized 32 three-phase induction motors allegedly manufactured without the mandatory BIS Standard Mark at an industrial unit in Surat, stepping up enforcement against violations of compulsory product certification requirements.
The search-and-seizure operation was conducted by the BIS Surat Branch Office on October 16, 2026, at M/s Angel Industrial Instrumentation, located at PL-89, Dwarkesh Society, U.M. Road, Surat, Gujarat-395007. The action followed concerns over the manufacture of three-phase squirrel-cage induction motors without the required Standard Mark.
According to BIS, the alleged violation contravenes the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, and the Energy Efficient Induction Motors Three Phase Squirrel Cage (Quality Control) Order, 2017. The 32 motors found on the premises were sealed and seized in accordance with the prescribed procedures.
The operation was conducted under the guidance of Vikrant, Director and Head of the BIS Surat Branch Office. The team comprised Dhanraj Karad, Deputy Director; Nirbhay Kumar, Assistant Director; and Gaurav Dadhe, SSA, with assistance from personnel of Khatodara Police Station, Surat.
BIS said further legal action, including prosecution, would be initiated in accordance with the applicable provisions of the BIS Act, 2016.
Section 29(2) of the Act provides for punishment for specified contraventions, including imprisonment for a term that may extend to one year, a fine subject to the statutory minimum and maximum linked to the value of the goods, or both, as applicable. The precise penalty would depend on the provision applied and the facts established in the case.
Mandatory certification requirements are intended to ensure that products conform to prescribed standards. Manufacturing products covered by compulsory certification without the requisite BIS licence can undermine quality assurance, mislead consumers and potentially expose users to safety risks.
BIS conducts search-and-seizure operations based on information received to detect violations and protect public interests. Members of the public who have information about the misuse of the BIS Standard Mark or the manufacture of products covered by mandatory certification without the required licence may contact the Head of the BIS Surat Branch Office, First Floor, Doordarshan Bhavan, Karimbad Administrative Building, Ghod Dod Road, Surat-395001, on 0261-2990071.
Complaints may also be emailed to subo-bis@bis.gov.in or cmed@bis.gov.in. BIS has stated that the identities of persons providing such information will be kept strictly confidential.
