Sporting champions are made not just on the track, but also through the quality of coaching, training facilities and institutional support behind them. With R. Senthil Kumar, IRTS, taking over as President of the Southern Railway Sports Association (SRSA), the spotlight turns to the institution’s role in nurturing railway athletes and creating pathways to national and international sporting success.

  • Talent pipeline: New leadership expected to strengthen athlete development, training facilities and sports infrastructure
  • Railway sporting legacy: Indian Railways has produced Arjuna Award, Padma Shri and other national award-winning athletes
  • Track to glory: SRSA-linked athletes Vithya Ramraj, Baranica Elangovan and R. Rajesh feature among the names highlighted in the association’s sporting legacy

Senthil Kumar, Principal Chief Commercial Manager (PCCM), Southern Railway, will oversee initiatives aimed at developing railway sportspersons, upgrading training facilities, strengthening sports infrastructure and encouraging participation in national and international competitions.

The Southern Railway Sports Association plays an important role in identifying and nurturing sporting talent among railway employees. Under its new president, its priorities include sustaining this sporting tradition and creating an environment in which athletes can improve their performance and compete at higher levels.

Railways: A breeding ground for champions

Indian Railways has a distinguished sporting legacy, with athletes receiving prestigious national honours, including the Padma Shri, Arjuna Award, Dhyan Chand Award, Dronacharya Award and Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.

Southern Railway has also contributed to this tradition by supporting athletes who have competed at major sporting events. Its sporting ecosystem brings together institutional support, training opportunities and competitive exposure to help employees pursue sporting excellence alongside their professional responsibilities.

Athletes keep the SRSA legacy alive

Among the athletes highlighted in connection with the SRSA sporting legacy are Vithya Ramraj of Palakkad Division, pole vaulter Baranica Elangovan and R. Rajesh of Tiruchirappalli.

Vithya Ramraj made headlines by matching P.T. Usha’s long-standing national record in the women’s 400m hurdles in 2023.

Baranica Elangovan has emerged as a notable Indian pole-vaulter, while R. Rajesh is cited for his contribution to the men’s 4x400m relay.

Their achievements underline the importance of sustained institutional support, access to quality training and opportunities to compete at the highest levels.

The challenge: Turning potential into podium finishes

For the new president, the larger task will be to ensure that sporting ambitions are backed by practical measures: better training facilities, access to coaching, improved infrastructure and systematic talent development.

A strong railway sports programme can benefit not only established athletes but also promising newcomers who need the right environment to progress from departmental competitions to national and international events.

As Senthil Kumar assumes leadership, the challenge is to build on Southern Railway’s sporting heritage and help more railway athletes translate their potential into podium finishes.
