AHMEDABAD, NOV 1

Ahmedabad’s postal administration is entering a new era of operational specialisation, with the inauguration of the Ahmedabad Heritage City Postal Division and a dedicated Office of the Postmaster General (Logistics), marking a major expansion and restructuring of the Department of Posts in Gujarat. The changes, effective November 1, 2026, are aimed at bringing postal administration closer to customers, strengthening logistics operations and preparing the network for evolving business and service requirements.

Postmaster General, North Gujarat Region, Krishna Kumar Yadav, inaugurated the newly created Ahmedabad Heritage City Postal Division at Ahmedabad General Post Office (GPO) and the Office of the Postmaster General (Logistics) at Speed Post Bhavan, Shahibaug.

The restructuring is part of a nationwide initiative by the Department of Posts to streamline its administrative framework, improve operational efficiency, expand business activities, strengthen revenue generation and make service delivery more responsive and customer-centric.

As part of the reorganisation, Gujarat Postal Circle has established a new Postal Region at Surat, supplementing the existing regions at Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Rajkot. The Circle has also created five new Postal Divisions: Ahmedabad Heritage City, Ahmedabad Utkarsh, Dahod, Surat (East) and Gandhidham.

In addition, recognising the growing importance of the logistics business, the Department has approved a dedicated post of Postmaster General (Logistics) and Director (Sales), Gujarat Circle, along with a separate office.

Ahmedabad now has three postal divisions

Inaugurating the Ahmedabad Heritage City Postal Division, Yadav said that three Postal Divisions would now function in Ahmedabad district to ensure more focused administration and efficient supervision of postal services.

The three divisions and their headquarters are:

  • Ahmedabad City Postal Division: Navrangpura Head Post Office.
  • Ahmedabad Heritage City Postal Division: Ahmedabad GPO.
  • Ahmedabad Utkarsh Postal Division: Dholka Post Office building premises.

The newly created Heritage City Division will oversee postal operations in the eastern part of Ahmedabad city, while Ahmedabad Utkarsh Division will manage postal services and administrative activities across the rural talukas of Sanand, Viramgam, Mandal, Dholka, Bavla, Dhandhuka and Dholera.

The reorganisation is expected to facilitate closer supervision, more effective monitoring and improved management of postal operations across urban and rural areas.

North Gujarat becomes the largest postal region

Another significant development is the expansion of North Gujarat Region following the transfer of Bhavnagar and Surendranagar Postal Divisions, previously under Rajkot Region.

With this addition, North Gujarat Region will have nine Postal Divisions, making it the largest Postal Region in Gujarat Circle.

The nine divisions are Ahmedabad City, Ahmedabad Heritage City, Ahmedabad Utkarsh, Gandhinagar, Banaskantha, Patan, Mehsana, Surendranagar and Bhavnagar.

The expansion is expected to strengthen administrative coordination and provide a more integrated framework for supervising postal operations across the region.

Dedicated logistics office to drive mail and parcel operations

Yadav also inaugurated the newly established Office of the Postmaster General (Logistics) at Speed Post Bhavan, Shahibaug, Ahmedabad.

The dedicated office will primarily focus on mail, parcel and international mail operations, reflecting the Department of Posts’ growing emphasis on logistics and associated business opportunities.

All Railway Mail Service (RMS) offices, Foreign Post Offices (FPOs), transport services and Mail Motor Services operating across Gujarat Postal Circle will come under its administrative control.

The dedicated structure is intended to strengthen operational coordination and supervision across the postal logistics network, an increasingly important segment of the Department’s service portfolio.

Towards a modern, customer-centric postal network

Yadav said the restructuring marked a significant step towards expanding postal services, strengthening administration and building a modern, responsive and robust postal network in keeping with changing requirements.

In line with the Government of India’s vision of “Minimum Government, Maximum Governance,” the new structure is expected to facilitate better administrative coordination, closer monitoring and more efficient delivery of postal services.

He emphasised that the Department of Posts is undergoing a significant transformation to emerge as a customer-centric, technology-driven, operationally efficient and financially self-reliant organisation.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Senior Superintendent of Post Offices Shishir Kumar; AGM, India Post Payments Bank (IPPB), Sandeep Kumar; Chief Manager Abhijit Jibhakate; Senior Postmaster Varis Vahora; Assistant Director Alpesh Shah; Ritul Gandhi; Darshan Tapasvi; Assistant Superintendents R.
