A degree marks the culmination of years of hard work; the values graduates carry into the world will determine the difference they make. Delivering this message at Karnavati University’s seventh convocation, Indian Coast Guard Director General Paramesh Sivamani urged young graduates to uphold discipline, integrity and service to the nation as they embark on the next chapter of their lives.

The ceremony, held in Gandhinagar on Saturday, October 31, celebrated academic achievement across disciplines while highlighting a parallel commitment to education and family welfare. Sivamani, the Chief Guest, conferred doctoral degrees and gold medals on PhD scholars and graduating students. Navika Kumar, Editor-in-Chief of the Times Group, attended as Guest of Honour.

Beyond degrees: A call to responsibility

Congratulating the graduating students and their families, Sivamani acknowledged their dedication, academic excellence and achievements, describing the occasion as a significant milestone in their lives.

His message went beyond professional success, encouraging the graduates to carry the values of discipline, integrity and service to the nation into their careers and future endeavours.

The emphasis on character and public responsibility added a larger purpose to the convocation, reminding the young achievers that education is not merely a route to individual advancement but also an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to society.

Education opens new doors for Coast Guard families

A key highlight of the ceremony was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Coast Guard Welfare & Wellness Association (CGWWA) and Karnavati University.

The agreement was signed by Priya Paramesh, President of Tatrakshika, and Ritesh Hada, President of Karnavati University, in the presence of senior officers and other dignitaries.

The partnership seeks to support the educational aspirations of children of serving, retired and deceased Indian Coast Guard personnel by providing access to academic programmes offered by the university.

The initiative recognises that the responsibilities of uniformed personnel extend beyond their professional duties and that educational opportunities for their families form an important part of their welfare.

Family welfare as a pillar of service

The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to helping Coast Guard families pursue higher education and access opportunities for the next generation.

The Coast Guard’s operational responsibilities require dedication and sustained commitment from its personnel. Support for their families, in turn, is an important component of the wider welfare framework underpinning the service.

Karnavati University expressed pride in partnering with the Indian Coast Guard, reaffirming its commitment to nurturing the aspirations of the children of those who serve and have served the nation.

Academia and the Armed Forces build common ground

The convocation brought together academic achievement, national service and institutional collaboration. By connecting a university’s educational resources with the welfare needs of Coast Guard families, the MoU offers a framework for cooperation between an academic institution and a national maritime security force.

The Indian Coast Guard continues to safeguard India’s maritime interests, while its engagement with educational institutions also reflects the importance of investing in people and their families.

The initiative sends a clear message: supporting those who serve the nation includes helping their children pursue their educational ambitions and prepare for the future.
