Mumbai Indians have turned to one of the most familiar faces in their history to lead the team into its next chapter, elevating Kieron Pollard to Head Coach and giving a defining 16-year association with the franchise a new dimension. The transition from celebrated match-winner to the man in the dugout underlines MI’s faith in continuity, institutional knowledge and leadership shaped by years at the highest level of T20 cricket.

The appointment extends one of the most enduring player-to-coach relationships in the game. Pollard joined Mumbai Indians as a 22-year-old and went on to become an integral part of the franchise’s identity, delivering memorable performances and contributing to its success. Having subsequently served as Batting Coach, he now takes on the wider responsibility of guiding the team.

Nita M. Ambani, Co-Owner, Mumbai Indians, said: “Pollard joined Mumbai Indians as a young 22-year-old and, over the past sixteen years, has become an integral part of our family. As a player, he gave us many unforgettable moments, and as a coach, he has continued to share his experience, passion and deep understanding of the game. We are delighted to see him take on this new responsibility as Head Coach. Polly knows what it means to wear the MI jersey and what it takes to play for the Paltan. I am confident that he will bring the same commitment, belief and determination to this role. I wish him every success as he leads the team into its next chapter.”

Pollard brings to the role an intimate understanding of Mumbai Indians’ culture, expectations and competitive demands. His long association with T20 cricket has also given him a ringside view of the format’s evolution, from changing tactical approaches to the growing importance of adaptability and match awareness.

His experience as both a player and Batting Coach gives him a distinctive vantage point: he knows the pressures of wearing the MI colours, the demands of a high-performance dressing room and the importance of turning individual talent into collective strength.

Kieron Pollard, Head Coach, Mumbai Indians, said: “It is an honour to take on the role of Head Coach of Mumbai Indians. MI has been a huge part of my life and career, and the bond I share with this team, the players and the Paltan means a great deal to me. Having experienced this journey as a player and then as a coach, I understand what Mumbai Indians stands for and the responsibility that comes with representing the Blue and Gold. I am grateful to Mrs. Nita Ambani, Akash Ambani and the entire MI family for their trust in me. I look forward to working closely with the players and support staff, building on the team’s legacy, helping our talent grow and giving the Paltan many more reasons to celebrate.”

The elevation signals Mumbai Indians’ emphasis on continuity while preparing for the challenges ahead. Pollard’s leadership will draw on the experience of the franchise’s successful years, with a stated focus on developing talent, reinforcing team culture and sustaining the pursuit of excellence on and off the field.

For the Paltan, a familiar match-winning presence is now stepping into a defining leadership role. The jersey remains the same; the responsibility is considerably bigge
