Seven more people including four women succumbed to coronavirus in Puducherry taking the toll to 87 while 264 fresh cases were detected, a top Health department official said on Sunday.

Most of the patients died of severe Covid pneumonia, Director of Health and Family Welfare S Mohan Kumar said, adding the deceased were in the age group ranging from 38 to 80.
The seven deaths in the last 24 hours ending 10 am Sunday took the number of fatalities to 87, he said.
While three male patients died in hospitals in Puducherry and Yanam region (JIPMER, Indira Gandhi Government Medical College (IGGMC) hospital in Puducherry and the Government GH in Yanam), two female patients died at IGGMC and two others at the Government Hospital in Karaikal.
The overall tally of COVID-19 infections reported so far in Puducherry was 5,382 of which 2,094 (including 712 home quarantined patients) were active cases.
The total number of patients treated and discharged so far was 3,201.
Mohan Kumar said as many as 131 patients were discharged from hospitals during the last 24 hours.
The 264 new cases were identified after examination of 958 samples projecting positivity rate at 27.5 per cent while fatality rate was 1.6 per cent.
The Department of Health has so far tested 46,878 samples of which 40,575 tested negative and results of the examination of remaining specimens were awaited, the official added.
