Southern Railway has scaled up the number of suburban services in Chennai area to 244 trains per day (around 40% of pre-COVID19 level) to cater to the travel needs of essential services staff of both government and other organisations.

A release from CPRO Mr. B. Guganesan said, the Southern Railway has now decided to permit, women passengers (who are not coming under the category of essential services staff) to travel in Chennai Suburban trains during the non-peak hours from Monday to Saturday and to travel throughout the day on Sundays with effect from coming Monday (November 23, 2020).
The non-peak hours are reckoned from the early hours of the day to 07:00 hours in the morning, 10:00 to 16:30 hours and from 19:30 hours to the closing hours of the day.
Women passengers shall be permitted to commence their journeys at the boarding points during the non-peak hours as stipulated above. They are allowed to travel either using their Season tickets or on purchase of single journey tickets. Single journey tickets can be purchased by women passengers at the boarding stations before the commencement of non-peak hours as stipulated above.
Children up to the age of 12 years accompanying women passengers are also permitted to travel during non-peak hours. Women passengers (who are not coming under the category of essential services staff) should not commence their journeys at the boarding stations during the peak hours from 07:00 to 10:00 hr and again from 16:30 to 19:30 hr on all working days from Monday to Saturday.
Appeal to follow protocols:
Southern Railway appeals to all the passengers using suburban train services to follow all the COVID-19 protocols issued from time to time by Ministry of Health & Family welfare, Govt of India and Government of Tamil Nadu from time to time.
• Please do not enter station premises and train without wearing mask
• Please do not crowd while boarding and de-boarding the train
• Please maintain social distancing in station premises and on board
• Please co-operate with Railway employees for checking your valid documents at stations and during your journey.
