Refugees, who had migrated illegally during the ethnic war during the 1990s, living in 103 camps across Tamil Nadu and 85 refugees in a special camp in Tiruchirappalli demand citizenship and a slew of demands here on Saturday.
Pa Pugazhendhi, Coordinator of the Sri Lankan Tamil Refugees Protection Committee said, “The Indian government is constructing houses for Tamils living in Sri Lanka, while the refugees from Sri Lanka are living in pathetic conditions in Tamil Nadu.”
“As the ethnic war in Sri Lanka was over, many refugees wish to return to their homeland. Both state and central governments should come forward to arrange their journey back free-of-cost,” he demanded.
As the elections are around the corner in Tamil Nadu, the committee has decided to meet political parties and urge them to include their 9-point charter of demands in their poll manifesto, Pugazhendhi said.
