A 13-year old girl who was found abnormal spinal deformity – affected by Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) was corrected through Non-Fusion Anterior Scoliosis Correction Technique using the country’s first Minimally Invasive Double Curve Correction surgeries five days ago, said Preetha Reddy, Vice Chairperson, Apollo Hospitals Group here on Wednesday.

Preetha Reddy said that Apollo Orthopedics Institute is the country’s top unit offering finest orthopaedic treatment with the legacy of success, innovation, and excellence.

She thanked the Australian patients for their faith reposed on the world’s best treatment to the girl.
Dr. Sajjan K. Hegde said that the Australian girl was given a new lease of life through the Non-Fusion Anterior Scoliosis Correction Technique with the minimally invasive Double Curve Correction Surgeries instead of the traditional fusion surgical treatment performed to address the deformity with metal implants.
Apollo has used the revolutionary concept in treating children with the new technique available only in Apollo in the entire country. With this technique, the spine deformity is corrected but not fused through a thread, allowing the child to return to full normal activities, including sports, etc. This could not be possible with the traditional method of fusion surgical treatment, Dr. Hegde said.
The two surgeries performed on the girl lasted for over nearly three and a half hours with the help of a team of orthopedic experts, including Dr. Kosygan and anaesthesia specialist. The anaesthesia specialists helped to deflate both lungs during the surgery, Dr. Hegde said.
The girl Xavia thanked the Apollo Hospital and the team of doctors. Her parents and her cute sister were also present. Her parents Wayne Robert Ellison and Tiziana Teresa Simonelli said they brought their child to Apollo after consulting various hospitals in the world. They were happy and satisfied with the treatment offered at the hospital.
The girl who underwent the surgery five days ago could be able to walk was brought to the press conference.
A release from the hospital said the “S’’ shaped double curvature of the spine is usually seen in young girls aged 8-12 year it affects two to three per cent of the children between the ages of 10 and 18, a time when the human body is growing at its most rapid pace.
When asked about the cost of the surgery, Dr. Hegde said that it is cheaper than any other hospitals in the world.
