On the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas, Chennai did not merely remember the heroes of the 1999 conflict—it brought their courage alive for the youth, reminding the nation that the freedom to dream, study, build and prosper is secured every day by those who stand ready to sacrifice everything for the Motherland.

Leading the nation’s tribute on the solemn occasion, General Officer Commanding, Dakshin Bharat Area, Lieutenant General V Sreehari, laid a wreath at the Victory War Memorial, Chennai, honouring the indomitable courage, unwavering resolve and supreme sacrifice of the brave soldiers who secured India’s victory in the Kargil conflict.
The floral tribute became a powerful symbol of a nation’s gratitude to the bravehearts whose sacrifice ensured that India’s sovereignty remained inviolable.
When the last post speaks, a nation remembers
Kargil Vijay Diwas stands as a timeless reminder that the nation’s peace, security and sovereignty are safeguarded by the extraordinary valour of soldiers who place duty above self and make the ultimate sacrifice in service of the Motherland.
The solemn ceremony featured a Tri-Services Guard of Honour, followed by the poignant rendition of the Last Post, evoking a profound sense of remembrance, pride and gratitude.
Wreaths were also laid by Flag Officer Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Naval Area Commodore Suvaratan Magon, Air Officer Commanding Tambaram Air Commodore Tapan Sharma, Commander Coast Guard Region (East) District-5 Murugan, veterans, Veer Naris and NCC cadets, reflecting the collective homage of the Armed Forces and the nation.
A salute that travelled from the memorial to the next generation
Schoolchildren, NCC cadets, government officials and serving personnel of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard joined the commemoration.
Set against the inspiring backdrop of the revitalised Victory War Memorial, with its T-55 tank and iconic naval artefacts, the ceremony reaffirmed the enduring legacy of India’s Armed Forces.
For the young participants, the memorial was more than a site of remembrance. It was a living classroom of patriotism—where the story of Kargil’s heroes became a lesson in courage, discipline, leadership and service.
The tribute also carried a message for India’s youth: the nation’s future is not only to be imagined, but also to be served.
From Kargil’s mountains to Chennai’s streets, the salute rolls on
In a stirring tribute to the indelible legacy of the Kargil heroes, Lieutenant General V Sreehari flagged off a commemorative motorcycle ride comprising riders from the Company Rides Team, Royal Enfield Clubhouse, Uthandi, and the Indian Army.
The ride carried the spirit of Kargil beyond the memorial, taking the message of remembrance and patriotism to the streets of Chennai.
The roar of motorcycles became a contemporary salute to the silence of the memorial—a reminder that every generation can find its own way to honour the heroes who gave everything for India.
The call of Kargil: Serve, lead, sacrifice
The 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas commemoration was ultimately not only about looking back.
It was about asking a question of the present generation: What will we do with the freedom secured by the sacrifice of our soldiers?
For some, the answer may lie in joining the Armed Forces. For others, it may be service through science, technology, education, innovation or nation-building.
But the spirit remains the same.
The Kargil hero fought so India could dream without fear. The youth of India must now rise to build a nation worthy of that sacrifice.
At Chennai’s Victory War Memorial, a flower was laid for every hero.
