Shalby Hospital, Naroda, has achieved a significant medical milestone with the successful completion of its first-ever kidney transplant, demonstrating the hospital’s growing expertise in specialised renal care and advanced surgical procedures.
The recipient, Kalpesh Patel (37), had been battling chronic kidney disease for several years. By January 2025, his kidney function had dropped to less than 10%, despite undergoing dialysis three times a week. His deteriorating heart function — down to 25% — further complicated his condition, making a transplant the only viable treatment option.
Following detailed counselling by Dr. Mahendra Mulani, Consultant Nephrologist at Shalby Hospital Naroda, Patel’s father volunteered to donate a kidney. A comprehensive evaluation was carried out by a multidisciplinary team comprising Dr. Mulani, Dr. Kosha Patel, Dr. Kirtipal Visana, and Dr. Darshit Shah, ensuring medical compatibility and fitness for the procedure. The transplant was conducted after receiving due government approval.
Post-surgery, both donor and recipient showed remarkable recovery. Patel’s kidney function improved within days, creatinine levels returned to normal, and his overall health stabilised. His strength and appetite have returned, and he is expected to resume normal activities soon. The donor has also made a complete recovery.
Commenting on the achievement, Dr. Mulani said, “This successful kidney transplant marks a new beginning for Kalpesh Patel and his family. It also reflects Shalby Hospital Naroda’s expertise in advanced renal care. Organ transplantation restores not only health but also hope — offering dialysis patients a chance at a better quality of life.”
