“The best way to prevent a disaster or any crisis is to take precautionary measures,” said popular Tamil actor Arjun pledging his support for the Save Soil Movement.
Sadhguru, Founder-Isha Foundation, launched the global movement to Save Soil from extinction in March this year and is currently on a 100-day 30,000-km lone motorcycle journey to build global consensus to reverse and halt further soil degradation.
“A major global crisis is ‘desertification’. Fertile soil of our Mother Earth is losing its microbes and vital organisms and turning into mere sand,” said the actor elaborating on the need to save soil. He said “commercial farming practices” have slowly eroded soil health over the years leading to desertification and added that “it will soon become the biggest natural disaster (and) growing food will be the biggest problem.”
The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has warned that by 2045, there will be a 40% drop in food production while the demand for food is expected to skyrocket with a population of 9.2 billion.
“Soil is very important for the survival of not only humans but all living things and the planet,” the actor said and pledged to “not only learn about (the impending crisis)”, but to also educate others and solicit mass support for the Movement. The actor asserted that “we are basically doing it for ourselves and for our next generation.”

The Save Soil Movement has garnered global support across the spectrum including UN and international environment bodies; agriculture and soil scientists; heads of state; business, social and cultural leaders; celebrities and the sporting fraternity; and millions of citizens worldwide.
Sadhguru, who embarked on the lone motorcycle #JourneyForSoil from London on 21st March, is currently in the Middle East and will reach India at the end of this month. His journey will culminate in the Cauvery river basin where Isha is implementing its mega greening initiative, Cauvery Calling, with the objective of reviving soil health in the river basin area to restore river Cauvery’s depleted flow levels. This is expected to bring farmer prosperity, food and water security for the region.
