Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL), India’s largest renewable energy company, has strengthened its global sustainability leadership by integrating the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) framework into its enterprise-wide strategy. The TNFD system provides a rigorous, science-based approach to evaluating nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities—ensuring biodiversity becomes an intrinsic part of AGEL’s renewable energy growth model.
Beginning FY24, AGEL undertook comprehensive assessments across all its operational sites to map nature-related risks and opportunities. This proactive groundwork, initiated even before joining the TNFD Adopters group, highlights the company’s shift from compliance-led ESG reporting to a nature-positive approach embedded in long-term strategic planning.
“Nature is central to our growth story. By mainstreaming the principles of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures into our operations, we are identifying opportunities to build resilient ecosystems alongside renewable energy infrastructure. Our approach is to ensure that renewable expansion actively contributes to protecting and restoring natural capital. Addressing nature-related risks in positive manner is critical for long-term business resilience and sustainable value creation for communities, investors and the planet,” said Ashish Khanna, CEO, AGEL.
The TNFD framework—developed by the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative, the United Nations Development Programme, the World Wildlife Fund and Global Canopy—provides global standards for evaluating and disclosing nature-related risks. By adopting the framework, AGEL strengthens its leadership among renewable energy companies that integrate biodiversity into core decision-making, aligning with global conservation priorities and reinforcing India’s climate leadership.
AGEL is also a signatory to the India Business Biodiversity Initiative (IBBI and IBBI 2.0) and has set an ambitious target to achieve No Net Loss of Biodiversity by 2030. To support this goal, the company will plant 27.86 million trees across its project sites, expanding its long-term ecological stewardship.
