AHMEDABAD, DEC 17
Ahmedabad International Airport Limited (AIAL), the operator of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA), has significantly enhanced its operational preparedness and passenger service facilities to ensure smooth and uninterrupted flight operations during the upcoming low-visibility winter period.
Given that fog and poor visibility across northern India often lead to flight delays and diversions, Ahmedabad Airport’s strategic location and robust infrastructure position it among a select few airports in the region capable of sustaining operations under such challenging conditions.
In coordination with the Airports Authority of India (AAI), SVPIA has ensured that all navigational aids (NAVAIDs) and airfield lighting systems are fully serviced, calibrated and revalidated ahead of the season. A recent calibration flight for the newly aligned glide path on the southern end of Runway 05-23, conducted with the support of airline partners, has further strengthened approach reliability and operational safety.

The airport has also reinforced its diversion-handling capability, with dedicated Code C aircraft stands kept on standby at all times for incoming diverted flights. Between December 2024 and October 2025, SVPIA successfully handled over 90 flight diversions from nearby airports, demonstrating its operational resilience and reliability during adverse weather conditions.
On the ground, comprehensive preparations have been undertaken, including fresh runway markings, meticulous maintenance of runway and approach lighting systems, and enhanced deployment of trained manpower to ensure seamless aircraft movement during periods of reduced visibility.
Inside the terminal, passenger comfort has been prioritised through additional seating arrangements and well-stocked food and beverage outlets, offering relief to travellers affected by delays. All airport stakeholders have also been advised to review and strengthen contingency plans, drawing on three-year fog forecasts and analytical inputs provided by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
To keep passengers informed, a robust advisory and communication system will disseminate real-time updates on delays, diversions and operational changes via the airport’s official website and social media platforms. Security and landside staffing has been further augmented to ensure smooth passenger movement, traffic flow and parking operations.
Reaffirming its commitment to operational excellence and a passenger-first approach, SVPIA continues to work closely with airlines, regulators and all airport stakeholders to ensure safe, efficient and seamless travel experiences throughout the fog season.
