Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri VK Saraswat on Sunday said adopting a scientific approach to policymaking is a must.
VK Saraswat, a member of Niti Aayog, chancellor at Jawaharlal Nehru University, an eminent scientist and former director of the revered Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), was speaking at ChhatrNiti Aayog, an Intellectual Congress of the Youth – a platform to ideate, analyse, discuss, and deliberate upon the process of state policymaking. It was created by Karnavati University to enable the youth in being well-versed with state policymaking and let their ideas take a bigger form in catalysing the country’s growth.
The event was held at Karnavati University, a state private university located in Uvarsad, Gandhinagar, and is dedicated to excellence in teaching and is focussed on interdisciplinary learning.

Calling India, the fastest growing major economy in the world, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has laid out a vision to achieve US $5 trillion GDP by 2024-25. The role of youth is critical here and has been highlighted time and again by visionaries and thought leaders.

Sharing his thoughts, VK Saraswat, said, “The 21st century landscape is driven by data economy. This is the age of information and knowledge. Therefore, for making any policy, data and information is an essential element. Science is the bedrock of any sector. A non-scientific policy cannot sustain for long. Therefore, adopting a scientific approach to policymaking is a must.”

“The world is a global network today. It is therefore, important to look at other countries. However, aping the western world blindly will not work for us. It is important to understand what is valid for our country,” Saraswat further went on to say.

“For instance, when the American and European countries began aggressively moving towards a gas-based economy, there was a strong buzz of making India also a gas-based economy. However, India’s energy transition policy cannot be the same. In fact, Indian resources are not oil and gas but it is coal. So why not exploit one’s own resource and instead of reducing imports,” he added.

Speaking about the event, Ritesh Hada, president, Karnavati University, said, “The central government is making active efforts to boost growth, create jobs and attain a holistic, sustainable development. Our Honourable PM Narendra Modi has called the youth of India as the growth engine of India. In its ambitious aspiration of becoming a US $5 trillion economy, it is the youth of India which will script the India Growth Story over the next two decades.
Karnavati University has invariably remained at the forefront of supporting and promoting innovations through design. It is our constant endeavour to develop an environment where ideas blossom and are nurtured. I am confident that the series of deliberations on pressing issues of national concern, held at ChhatrNiti Aayog will become building blocks of India’s growth.”
Some 1,000 students from seven universities and educational institutions participated in ChhatrNiti Aayog.
