The Salem Division of the Southern Railway announced that it has dispatched the first consignment of cottonseeds, one of the essential commodities, to Bathinda in Punjab from Salem on Monday.

This was the first consignment of essential commodities moved to Punjab by the Southern Railway after the lockdown.
A release from the Salem Division said parcel loading, which became a dormant area, has been revived by the Salem Division of Southern Railway with its intensive marketing drive conducted under the leadership of E. Harikrishnan, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (DCM).
Due to the aggressive efforts taken by the DCM, the first consignment of cottonseeds was sent to the farmers in Punjab. This would fetch a revenue of Rs. 27 lakh to the railways, the release added.
Salem Division is proud to share the responsibility of moving essential commodities and has also ensured many steps to see that the loading is done in the safest manner possible. All the loading personnel were allowed to enter the Railway premises only after screening them with handheld thermometres to ensure the safety of all.
Also, social distancing was strictly maintained among the loading personnel during the loading, all the loading personnel have been supplied masks and hand sanitizers, thus fulfilling all safety norms and helping the nation fight Covid-19, an official said.
Harikrishnan, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager and his team have personally monitored the loading activities. U. Subba Rao, Divisional Railway Manager, Salem, and A. Annadurai, Additional Divisional Railway manager, Salem have appreciated the efforts of the Commercial team.
Harikrishnan said the railways welcomes the general public to make use of its parcel wagons to transport essential commodities across the nation on a 24×7 basis. Industries and traders who are dealing with essential goods are invited to use the railway freight service.
